IB Butte Falls and Rogue River here Fri day night gained Saturday night championship finalist bertha in the Jackson county B high school basketball tourney but not without hard struggles. Butte Falls bounced Phoenix 38 to 30 and Rogue River edged pas Talent 39 to 37 Both vic tors were hard pressed most of the wav. In Friday afternoon games Gold Hill and Jackn ville got to the consolation fi nals, Gold Hill by bumping St. Mary's 36 to 27 and k"v"lc by biating Prospect 38 to il. Loggtrs Take Ovar The Loggers took command over Phoenix late in the second nuartcr Butte Falls won out 8 ?o 7 in a see-saw first frame But Phoenix hopped In front 13 to 8 by 2 minutes 15 seconds of the second stanza. The Loggers on two Koala by Pinochle Poole and one by Dude Henshaw went back ahead 14 to 13 by 4 minutes 20 seconds. The Pirates' Fred Furry knotted the tally with a free shot. Field heaves by Darwin Moore and Poole gave Butte Falls an 18 to 14 halftime margin. From that stage Phoenix never got closer than three points to Butte Falls although they hounded the Loggers, put ting up a tough battle and turn ing to a length of the floor de fense in late moments In a des perate effort to get control of the ball. Butte Falls led at the third quarter 31 to 24 and at the automatic breather 36 to 27. Nip and Tuck Gama The Rogue River-Talent fra cas started out a nlp-and-tuck affair, the rivals knotting at 2 to 2, 6 to 6 during the first 6 minutes 30 seconds. Charles Ja cobs flipped In a two-pointer at 7 minutes 30 seconds to give Rogue River a 10 to 8 advantage nd the lead for keeps. First quarter standing was 11 to 10. Rogue River lengthened to 20 to 10 In 6 minutes of the second period. However, Talent com menced a valiant uphill climb nd cut the deficit to. 21 to 17 py the half. The Bulldogs almost caught Hogue River in the third stanza, eutscoring the Chieftains 13 to 12. Edges Nearer Title In Hoop Race By United Preis Washington State college edged a little nearer the north ern division crown in the Pacific Coast conference basketball race Friday night by drubbing -. the University of Washington 54-46. The resurgent Idaho Vandals, meantime, erased any mathema tical chances the University of Oregon had for the title by up setting the Ducks 53 to 47. The games shuffled the stand ings with only WSC standing firm in top spot. Oregon State, idle last night, took possession of second spot as Washington tumbled 27 percentage points down. Idaho moved out of the cellar with Its win over Oregon. Idaho overcame an early Ore gon lead to run the Webfoots into the dust during the first half. The Vandals at one time held a 23-13 edge. Oregon came back strongly in the second half to knot the count at 40-bII. But Idaho's Bob Pritch ctt connected with a long, left handed shot to put the Vandals ahead for keeps. Eagle Point Next Home Game Dated On Tuesday Eagle Point, Fob. 13 Next basketball game for the Eagle Point high will be Tuesday, Feb ruary 21, when it takes on Illi nois Valley (Kerby) in a South ern Oregon conference-District 4 JDJ clash on the Eagles floor. Varsity game will be at 8:15 after a prelim. While the Eagle Point quintet has not done so well in district1 and Southern Oregon conference play this season it is undclcatcd and leading the Jackson-Douglas-Josephine league without a de feat in games played to dale. the Rogue leads successively to 28 to 27, 30 to 29 and 31 to 30. Pete Purricr's shot at the inter mission horn made it 33 to 30. Rogue River extended to 37 to 30 in the fourth quarter but with Horb Combs hitting four, Nichols two and Montgomery one Talent hammered up to 30 to 37 bv the automatic timeout. The Chieftains stalled the ball almost the entire last 3 minutes. There were interruptions of two held balls and a missed foul shot by Purrler. Talent recovered at the final seconds and was driv ing baskctward at the horn. Talent Has Troubles Talent throughout had basket hitting trouble, particularly at the foul line. The Bulldogs swished only 5 nut of 20 foul tosses while the Chieftains made 9 out of 16. About 1.000 fans had gathered when the final brush of the eve ning began. l.inrup. Last week Thursday the Mob ilgas quintet defeated the confec tionery team after Green's ear lier in the season had won over the gasolinemen. Tomorrow's clash will be the playoff. District Playoffs Set Winner of this tilt will help the Rogue River town team rep rnsent Jackson county in the AAU district playoffs against the American Legion quintet ana Flcischman's Lumber company team Tuesday. The other teams are from Josephine county. Tuesday's playoffs will match the two teams from Grants Pass at 7 p.m. and about B:15 Rogue River will play the Green's vs. Mobilgas winner. Onlv one game will be played Monday evening at the Junior high. Dusette And Atlas Paired Promoter Mack Lillard an nounced yesterday that he has succeeded in matching ueorges Dusette and the Great Atlas for the feature match on Thursday night's armory wrestling card. They will meet over the one hour route with two out of three falls deciding the issue. There will also be two other matches on the program, starting at 8:30 pm, Lillard said. Both Dusette and the Atlas are full nelson experts but differ greatly in their wrestling siyie. Dusette prefers to use legitimate holds and to stay well within bounds of the bonk of rules while the sclf-slylcd Mr. America re sorts to any means to gain the nod and almost always seeks to disable an opponent beyond the necessary amount when gaining a fall. The match has long been sought by Lillard and is one which local wrestling fans have been waiting to see for a long lime. The other two matches will probably be announced tomor row. Jack Burke Sett Pace In Texas Golf Tourney Hnrlingen, Tex., Feb. 18 (U.R) Blond Jack Burke, the rising golf star from White Plains, N. Y., took over the 54-hole lead today in the Rio Grande valley open tournament with a 14-un-derpar 109. Young Burke, carding a 31-35 06, was hard-pressed by Fred Haas Jr. of New Orleans, La.; Dave Douglas of Newark. Del., and Skip Alexander of Knox villc, Tenn., who were tied for second place with 200s. The local junior high varsuy (ninth grade) needed an over time to gain a 35 to 33 decision in the afternoon finale after the local eighth graders had dropped the visitors 33 to 31 in a result that was not decided until me final minute and a half of the igame. Klamath had dominated the first half In scoring. Klamath was ahead of the lo nai sarsiiv 8 to 7 at the first quarter but Medford went into a 17 to 12 halftime lead. .24 10 20 at the third period and 30 to Baseball At Senior High Medford high will open its Southern Oregon conference baseball schedule March 31 with Eagle Point high on the local field Coach Alex McDonald an nounced Saturday. He said the conference schedule had been completed but that other games will be added to Merttord later. Anril 7 the Tornado will meet Central Point at Medford. April 14 it will be against Ashland at Medford, April 22 Medford will nlav at Klamath Falls. Anril 25 the Tornado will go to Eagle Point and on April 58 the locals will meet Grants Pass on the lo cal school field. The May schedule opens on the 2nd when Medford will play at Central Point, followed May 5 when Medford goes to Ashland, May 12 when the Tornado meets Klamath here and ends May 19 at flrnntc Pass. Other schools to be scheduled for 1950 include Roscburg, Myr tle Creek and possibly urain or Eugene. Marlene Tops Sister Florida Golf Tourney Palm Beach. Fla., Feb. 18 (U.R) Marlene Bauer of Mid land, Tex., after beating her old er sister for the second time within a week, today shared the Everglades invitational mixed foursome title with Reginald Boardman Jr. of Palm Beach. Marlene, who celebrated her 16th birthday two days ago, teamed with Boardman to beat ; older sister Alice and Clarke Hardwick, 3 and 2. Last week end, Marlene de feated Alice in the finals of the Palm Beach women's tourna ment. Rogue Snowmen Meet Monday At High School Rogue Snowmen Ski club will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in room 45 at Medford senior high school for its monthly meeting which will include the showing of a color film about the 1948 winter Olympics which the Standard Oil company will pre sent. Everyone interested in skiing whether a member of the club or not, will be welcome, officers said. WEATHER By United Press Northern California Few light showers Pt. Free Throws Help Free throws in the last min ute and a half of the eighth grade game by uregory and Huber pro vided the margin of Medford vic tory. Klamath led the first quar ter 9 to 2, and 22 to 13 at the half but Medford was on top 27 to 23 at the third and 31 to 29 at the automatic timeout. Tight man-to-man defense by both Klamath teams seemed to slow the Bulldogs in the early parts of both games but after they solved this riddle Mcdford's two quintets rolled along. Klam ath's height helped much in gain ing rebounds. No Local Walkaway The seventh grade game was by no means a walk-away for Medford although it led 7 to 2 at the first quarter, 10 to 7 at the half, 15 to 14 at the third and 24 to 20 at the automatic. It was the local seventh grade quintet's ninth victory in 10 games played. More Activities Set by Waltons Increased activities by the Jackson County Izaak Walton league to create added interest in the organization were an nounced here Saturday by newly eleeted President Frank D. Ap plin as he outlined several proj ects suggested. He also stressed the need for increasing the league's member ship in order to build an organi zation capable of carrying out contemplated activities. Also elected recently along with Applin were Harry F. El den, first vice-president; W. B. Barnum, second vice-president: Chester Irish, secretary, and Clifford Ayres, treasurer. Named directors were W. L. Van Scoy, K. G. Denman, J. F. Moore, Richard C. Isaacs and A. W. Linsaas. Coaches and school represen tatives of the conference have voted to divide the conference into two leagues with larger schools (Medford, Grants Pass, Ashland and Klamath Falls) In one and ihe smaller schools (Eagle Point, Illinois Valley and Central Point) In the other league. At the end of both conferences a playoff will be held to deter mine the conference champ and the team to represent the district in the state title tournament. The Beavers will entertain the Webfoots next Friday eve ning in the final game of the season in mammoth new Gill coliseum. Saturday "night the clubs will switch operations to Oregon's McArthur court for the series finale. Reserve seats for Friday's "civil war" battle were sold out more than a week ago, but several thousand general admis sion tickets will go on sale at the gates at 6:45 the night of the game.
