Feb. 17 (U.R) Actor Gary Merrill, Hollywood s newest hope for stardom, isn't sure he can af ford to be fa mous. His first big premiere just nicked the family budget for $2027. Uo. "We decided we'd just wear any old thing and nobody d know the difference," Merrill flld. "Little did we knowl" That was the day before the critics started booming him as a brand new star. "And those were the most hysterical and expen sive eight days I ever hope to live through. Merrill didn't even own tuxedo. That set him back $130 Patent leather evening pumps were $22.95, a shirt was 5H.au, and cuff links and studs (imita tion gold) were $10. Socks at S3.S0 and a DlacK tie at J ana Merrill was all set for $197.95. Don't Forset Mrs.l How about the other $1930? Don't forect the little woman Mrs. Merrill announced she hadn't a thing to wear. But she was going to be economical about this. She bought a short evening dress for a "cut-rate of S185. Next came rhinestonc- studded satin sandals for $30, a "simply divine" pair of nude French kid evening gloves for $25, and sheer coBweorjy nose for $5. Next she found "an interest- SMOOTH AS "OCEAN-ROCKED" WHISKEY yr 'ZZr I ing" red wool cape stole thread ed with gold for $35. That tal lied up her outfit to $280. Came the day of the premiere and thermometers all over town did a nose dive. That "interest ing" stole wouldn't do more than cover Barbara's goosc pimplcs. Daihad To Fur Emporium So Merrill visited a bank and returned with a $1000 bill. He sliDued it into his wife s hot lit tle hand and told her to splurge on a fur coat. Mrs. Merrill protested for two minutes and dashed to the local fur emporium. She came home with a mink stole for "Just a lit lie hit more" $1500. Then she had her hair, nails, and toenails fixed (for $12) while Merrill hustled up a white orchid corsaae (another $12). "I thought the party and pre miere were worth it, he said. "We spent our down payment on a house, but we can start sav ing over again. Rarhara wasn't too happy though. She said the only nice thing anyone said to her was where did she gel her divine chandelier earrings and neck lare? Rogue River Rogue River, Feb. 16 Live Oak Grange is becoming noted for its delightful hosuitality and its sciuare dances are so popular that the urangers leei me neea of a larger dance floor as well larger hall for meetings, and they are working three nights a week to rush completion of their main hall. Last Saturday evening mem bers of five Granges were pres ent at the dance and there were number of their L.D.S. friends from Grants Pass. The next dance will be held February 25. All Grangers and their friends are invited. The March of Dimes campaign closed with the grand total of $341.39 collected in Rogue River and Wlmer district. Highest amount collected was the mail folders of Rogue River, second on the list was the grade school with $72.87 and the high school with $70.18. This money was raised throuuh their ball games and extra credit goes to tho girls of tho grade school who made popcorn and sold it and candy bars and thus earned $32 to swell the fund from their school. Two little Rogue River girls, Genie Frledenthnl. aged two and a half and Margery Paddock, 3, attended their first party Valen tines day when Miss tvelyn Burk entertained four small friends at her home. The meeting was held at the home of P. K. Nelson of Central Point. Mrs. Nelson served cake and ice cream. Navy Hopes To Get Flush Deck Carrier Washington, Feb. 17 (U.R) The navy disclosed today that it still hopes to get a flush deck "super carrier" that could han dle atomic bombers and long range patrol planes. A spokesman said that plans are being drafted for a flush deck carrier of between 50,000 and 55,000 tons. This would be somewhat smaller than the 65, 000 ton carrier, the U.S.S. Unit ed States, which Defense Secre tary Louis Johnson cancelled last spring. The proposed new super car rier still is very much in the tentative planning stage. The navy does not intend to submit it to the defense secretary and his budget committee for at least another year. Lindslrom's Secretary Victim Ot Amnesia San Francisco, Feb. 17 (U.R) John Edward Vernon. 42, spokesman for Dr. Peter Lind strom in his marital troubles with Actress Ingrid Bergman, struggled today to overcome a "type of amnesia." lie was eatea in a nospuai where he was admitted yester day, three days after his wife, Lydia, reported mm missing from their San Fernando valley home near Los Angeles. Mrs. Vernon, who flew here last niaht to be with her hus band, said he left home at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. However, police did not officially list him as miss ing for 48 hours the customary practice in Los Angeles. HALF-PINTS OUT Portland, Ore., Feb. 17 4U.R) The Oregon liquor control com mission said today its statewide stores no longer will handle half-pints. Sales of half-pints 'contributed to improper usage of alcohol," the commission said. Hong Kong, Feb. 17 (U.R) The United States aircraft car rier Boxer and the destroyers Anderson and Thompson left for the Philippines today in prepara tion for joint British-American fleet maneuvers in Philippines waters March 4-10.
