Fa,i Point Feb 15 The an nual Jackson county class B high school basketball tournament will open Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Eagle Point gymnasium when Talent high will face St. Mary's high (Mcdforcl). The tour nament will continue through Saturday evening. Rogue River high Is defending county and district champion and is a strong favorite to win the tourney championship and go on to the 1950 district playoff. Other games Thursday will find Phoenix playing Prospect at 4 p.m., Jacksonville high tak ing on Butte Falls at 7 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. it will bo Rogue River against Gold Hill. Two "Dark Hones" Some observers believe there may be a "dark horse" or two in the ract for honors and they T.,l.l n,l Ruttc Falls in this category. The Loggers kept Portland U. Coach Plans 'Leave' Soon Portland, Ore., Feb. 15 U.R Harry C. Wright, athletic direc tor and football coach at Port land university, said today he would leave the school "in two or three weeks, or as soon as I can clear up my office as ath letic director." At the same time, Wright said his staff was trying to "do its best" for the boys wanting to transfer In order to play inter collegiate football. Last week the university an nounced suspension of intercol legiate football because of its high cost at a time when the school was expanding its de partments. Sought As Coach Wright said two people, "both big men in the football profes sion" were applying for him for two head coaching jobs, one on the east coast and the other one on the west coast. While the coach said he held no bitterness towards the univer sity, he said "we could have fielded a first class team by the 1951 season capable of compet ing with such PCC giants, as California." "My parting with Portland," he added, "will bo on a friendly basis with a cash settlement of what's left of the three-year con tract." Last season was Wright's first year with the university. Boxing Scheduled At SOC Tonight Ashland, Feb. 15 (U.R) An elimination amateur boxing tour nament to select members of the team that will represent South ern Oregon college in its Inter collegiate boxing show with Chico State, will bo held Wed nesday at 8 p.m. In the SOC gym. The team boxing match with Chico State Is scheduled for SOC gym February 23. Two main events tonight will send Don Campbell against Bur ton Skinner of Phoenix in the 150-pound class and Lou Maurer against Jack Newton in the light heavyweight class. Eight other bouts will be featured. Among the other on the card will be Dalton James (135) and Bcrnic Rudd. It was also announced today that Coach "Ginger" Snapp of the SOC boxing team is working out and plans to make a come back in the pro boxing ranks. Casanova Quits Post As Santa Clara Coach San Jose, Cal., Feb. 15 (U.R) The way was clear today for the appointment of Coach Lon Cas anova of Santa Clara to the head football berth at Pittsburgh university. The popular, 44-yenr-old men tor submitted his resignation to the Santa Clara board of Ath letic control yesterday. After a three-hour meeting last night, the board announced the resig nation had been accepted. No other details were made known. SOUTHERN OREGON 4th and Fir Street! Friday Garnet Slated Friday games will see the los ers of games played both Thurs day allernoon and evening play each other in the consolation bracket at 2 and 4 p.m. That evening at 7 o'clock the winner In the Fhoenix-Prospect game will play the Butte Falls Jacksonville victor In the cham pionship bracket. At 8:30 p.m. Friday the vic tor in the Talent-St. Mary's clash will play the winner in the Gold Hill-Rogue River Ret-together. Saturday at 8 p.m. will be the consolation round championship game, at 7:30 p.m. will be the battle for third place between losers In Friday night's contests and at 9 p.m. will be the tour nament championship game be tween the winners in Friday's games. Ample Room Ready Ample room is available at Eagle Point to handle the large crowds expected each evening of the tourney. Last year when the district class A tournament was held there around 2,000 people sat in on some of the games played there. Phoenix high band will play Thursday night, Talent high band Friday night and Rogue River high band Saturday night. A drill team from Rogue River will put on an exhibition also. There will be no reserved seal tickets for any of the games, Hembre said. The box office will be open each afternoon at 1:30 and in the evening at 8:15. Miss Bauer and Boardman eked out a one-up victory yester day over Ruth Woodland of Mid Pines. N. C, and W. A. Pagan of Palm Beach, while Mrs. Piatt and Sevcrson downed Peggy Kirk of Findlay, O., and Earle T. Smith of Palm Beach 2 and 1. However. It is n't just an ordinary tag teamer for it pits the Great Atlas on one side and his arch enemy, Georges Ousctte, on the other. Dusette has been trying for several months to corner the self styled Peacock of the Ring In the North Bartlett street battle pit but has been unsuccessful. The popular strong man said he would take the tag team mix as an alternative but emphasized that he doesn't expect the cocky New Yorker to spend much time inside the ropes when that space is occupied by Mr. Dusette. Both are full nelson experts and Dusette often has resented the manner in which the Atlas has used the hold to subdue foes. "I'd like to see if he can do it to me." Dusette said. Newcomer Ame Skaaland will display his wares for the first time in a southern Oregon ring when he hooks up with good looking Pierre LaBelle in a one hour skirmish going to the mat at 8:30 p.m. Graders Vie On Thursday Roosevelt, which has already clinched the local grade school varsity basketball league cham pionship by winning four games and losing none, will play Jack son on the Jackson floor Thurs day at 4:15 p.m. and Washing ton will travel to Lincoln school. The Roughriders captured the grade school title last Thursday by defeating the strong Lincoln quintet. Each of the four local grade school plays eacli other twice and therefore play six games a season. Therefore a team that has won four games without a loss as Roosevelt has done can lose the rest of Its games and still emerge champion. Roosevelt already has defeated Washington twice, Lincoln twice and Jackson once. A win for the Teddies Thursday over Jackson will give them an undefeated season. Cagers Miss Death In Car Bedford. Pa., Feb. 15 (U.R) Lee Patton, head basketball coach of West Virginia univer sity, and two of his players nar rowly escaped death yesterday in a head-on collision on the Pennsylvania turnpike. Nelson File, driver of the automobile which crashed into the West Virginians' auto, was killed In the accident which oc curred 15 miles west of here while his companion, Harry Lenlor Jr., was seriously Injured. It was the Pointers fourth win in the conference in five games. Bighorn Helps Cause Hook snot master John Big- ham was tile scoring spark as Central Point spurted ahead after a 7 to 7 first period dead lock. As his teammates turned to ball hawking and slick play inaking, Bigham swished in nine consecutive points, two field goals, a free toss and two more field goals, to give the Pointers a 16 to 7 advantage. Herb Trautman and Herb Col ley each contributed buckets to bring Central Point's halftime total to 20. George McDaniels dropped in a field toss after seven minutes 30 seconds to pro vide Myrtle Creek's only tallies of the second quarter. Riverside Medford's varsity (ninth) grade basketball team will be out for revetige Friday afternoon when the local junior high cagers take on Klamath junior high quintets on the local floor for the Bull dog varsity lost its first game in two seasons last night to Grants Pass quintet. The local youths dropped a 28 to 24 decision to the Grants Pas9 ninth grade team on the laige Grants Pass senior higli floor for the local varsity's first defeat in about 24 games. Other Locals Win Other games played last night at Grants Pass saw the local sev enth graders win 30 to 19 and the eighth grade quintet come out on top by a 30 to 17 score. In the ninth grade or varsity game. Medford was behind 6 to 4 at the first quarter, 14 to 6 at the half and 21 to 17 at the third quarter. But the Bulldogs pushed it up to a 22 to 22 tie at the automatic timeout. Phone 2-5219 Beavers Top Idaho Quint Score 48-44 Corvallis, Ore., Feb. 15 (U.R) The Oregon State Beavers roll ed to a 48-44 Pacific Coast con ference basketball victory over Idaho last night to stay in the running for Northern division title honors. Idaho's only lead In the con test came after six minutes of play when the vandals moved ahead 6-5. The Beavers then took the lead and never relinquished it despite two strong second half Idaho rallies. The Oregonians held a 23-18 halftime advantage but quickly widened the gap to 36-24 after the intermission. However, a rush of points by Idaho closed the margin to 39-33. In the final two minutes, the vandals again rallied as Dick Reed, Bob Wheeler and Herb Mead scored a total of seven points. Individual honors were even ly divided among the five Ore gon State starters, while wheel-'! er was outstanding for the Vandals.
