Feb. 15 iU.fi Pain still is an unsolved problem of the medical scientists. Since prehistoric days, man has suffered pain, particularly the various tVDes of stomach aches, and while science has made some progress, the human being still has pain. The situation has been round ed up recently by Dr. M. I. Grossman, associate professor of physiology of the University of Illinois, who reported that there are several open doors through which medical science might find some answers to the unsolved problem of knocking pain. Soma Agents Effective Dr. Grossman recalls that a "very large proportion of ad dominal discomfort arises pri marily from disordered move ments of the digestive tube," and that it is that group of disorders that brings an impetus for an "ideal driuz." He said that a substance known as atropine is used as a standard by which new agents and all bids Is reserved. Simply stated, ha said, the ob jective is to find an orally effec tive drug with the potency of atropine "but without its dis turbing side effects of dryness of the mouth, blurring of the vi sion and increasing pulse rata." So far, he said, none has been found. The doctor said tests have been made with a drug known as dibutoiine, and that il appears to be a better substance for re lief than is atropine, although it does cause some side reactions. Pain in Peptic Ulcar Dr. Grossman said he and his workers believe that if some means could be found to stop acid secretion by the stomach an "effetive means" of treating pep tip ulcer would be at hand. "Both clinical and experimen tal evidence Indicate," he said, "that acid must be present for a peptic ulcer to develop." However, he does not believe that over-production of acid is a cause of peptic ulcer, but that it may be a "necessary element" in the process of ulceration. So, he said, medical men are admin istering the so-called antacids. They are not the answer, he con tended. "We are continuing to search for an effective drug although we have tested more than 500 compounds and have not yet found a promising one," he said. Dogs Aiding in Research Dr. Grossman said another im portant angle to the problem of drug treatment in peptic ulcer is the devolpment of substances to increase resistance of the stom ach wall to digestion of acid pepsin. Animal experiments have indi cated, he said, that certain ex tracts from intestines and from urine are capable of preventing ulcers in dogs. Such techniques also have been tried in human beings but with inconclusive re sults, he said. However, the trials should continue, Dr. Gross man believes. While the work so far has been on the negative result side generally, Dr. Grossman believes that the laboratory investigations have "opened several doors of approach which promise to yield results in the clinic." Air Force Openings Still Available Here Air force enlistments are still open for young men or women who can meet the high qualifi cations, TSgt. Gene F. Davis of the Medford army and air force recruiting station reported to day. He said that cutbacks and re cruiting curtailments in other services have given the impres sion that the air force has re st ricted enlistments. Davis brought out. however, that it is possible now for a qualified ap plicant to enlist immediately at many recruiting stations, or to be placed on a waiting list for one month. Applicants must be between 17 and 34 years of age and must meet high mental and physical screening. Enlistment periods are four, five and six years. Da vis pointed to the airman career program of more than 400 spe cialties in 42 fields. NOT ASKING MUCH Monterey, Cal. (U.R) The coun ty sheriff's office was on the look for an assistant constable recently but the qualifications scared most candidates off. The job called for a man who: 1, could speak three languages (English, Mexican-Spanish, and Filipino-Spanish); 2, would work a 24-hour day and still be con sidered a parttlme employe; and 3, would not require more than $150 a month.
