February 12, 1950 Jack Morris Tallies 25 Points As Tornado Tops Eagles. 67- 39 Eyed By Hank Graan Mall Tribune Sport Editor The Black Tornado basketball team looked as (harp as it has at anv time this season when it played Eagle Point but the "sharpest" man of all on offense for Medford was a well-built and fast youth by the name of Jack Morris. Medford's well - known and highly-respected all-around ath lete scored ponus lasi rnaay nisht with shots from most any place across the center line and from every angle as the Tornado walloped Eagle h"omi nign 0 in 38 nn the Medford floor. The older Morris boy on the quad caged 10 goals for 2U points and another five from the free throw line to lead both teams in the scoring. Bob Shores, evidently little bothered by his bad knee and playing a tough game all the way, tallied 14. Simmoni High Scorer High point men for the Eagles were Pat Simmons, a sparkplug all the evening, wnn 11 ana Lloyd Hnle with nine. Eagle Point just never had a chance to play the game it did against the Cavemen earlier last week when the Eagles coached by "Shy" Callaghan held Grants Pass on even terms for the first half and then fell down in the final quarters. Medford tallied six points in the first minute of play Friday night and the nearest the Eagles could get to even tying the score was in the early moments of the second quarter when the scorer gave Medford 13 and Eagle Point 10 points. Many Local Reserves Coach Frank Roelandt used reserves late in the third quarter and early in the fourth and in erted them again late In the last ctanza. Callaghan also used re serves late in the last quarter. When the Eagles started to score easily early in the fourth quar ter, Roelandt put back his first stringers. The game was fairly even In the first half although Medford took an early lead and led all the way. The TornHdo outscored the Eagles 13 to 8 in the first quarter but got 12 to 11 for Eagle Point in the second quar ter to hold a comparatively slim 25 to IS half lead. The last half was a somewhat different story for both teams as the Tornado quintet scored 21 Jiolnta each In the third and ourth quarters while the Eagles garnered B in the third and 11 in the last. Madford Upi Lead Medford led at the third quar ter pause 46 to 28 and at the automatic time out it was 56 to 38. The Eagles were able to tally but one point in the last three minutes. The Tornado defense showed (laws several times but Don Den man, Shores, Larue Smith and Pon Wilkinson, when he was in he game, did some nice rebound work. Connie Holzgang provided his usual "spark," and dribbling. Others playing for Medford besides those mentioned were Frank Morris, Ed Oldfield, Jim Grimm and Gary Boshears, Local Attack Smooth , Medford's attack was smooth, precise and usually unbothcred by its opponent's defensive tac tics. While the Tornado missed its share of shots the local accu racy was improved over most games played this season. ; In the preliminary game the Tornado junior classmen of the Tincr Cubs squad rallied in the aecond half to topple Eagle Point's junior varsity quintet 46 to 25. Ducks Swamp OSC Quintet Score 45-34 Eugene, Ore., Feb. 11 (U.R) The Oregon Webfoots snapped a four-game losing streak Friday night and pummeled hapless Oregon State 45-34 in a northern division basketball game. In the erratic, and at times wobbly contest, Oregon led from a 1-0 advantage until the end, marking up a halftime edge of 31-16. Oregon Guard Mel Krause was high point man with 10, as the erring Beavers' standouts, Bob Payne and Bill Harper, tied for marks with 6 points each. The Ducks' first half average of 48 per cent throttled State, which at best made 20 per cent. The Beavers narrowed the early gap to 6-9 but were headed the rest of the way. In a slow first half, five min utes elapsed before a score, Bob Amachcr's field goal for Oregon. Nine minutes and 10 seconds flew bv before OSC got one to make the count 34-20. Tag Team' Match For Armory Promoter Mack Lillard Is try ing to sign a tag team match for next Thursday night's wrestling card at the armory. Following last week's hectic match Karl Gray became en gaged in a bitter argument with the Great Atlas over tactics the super-egotist used in their match and Gray's side was taken by Georges Dusette. The Atlas has been ducking a match with Dusette for some time. Lillard stepped into the debate with the suggestion of a tag bout and Gray and Dusette immedi ately accepted. The Atlas held out for a partner, claiming none of the grapplcrs currently on the circuit are good enough to be his partner. The promoter Is going ahead with preparations for the tag bout while waiting for the Atlas to select a partner. Meanwhile, Lillard is beating the bushes for an opponent for Arne Skaaland, young Norwe gian newcomer, who will be seen in the one-hour opener. Girl Cagers Vie Monday Two basketball games will be on the sports menu Monday in St. Mary's school gymnasium starting at 7 p.m. when the pa rochial grade school team plays the Oak Grove school team in the third in a series of games be tween the two schools. Second game of the program slated for 8 p.m. will send the senior girls against the junior girls with both representing st. Mary's high school. The final game between the girls' teams will climax an intra mural basketball program in which the seniors have won two and lost as many while the jun iors have taken three victories and been defeated but once. Oak Grove already has taken two victories from the parochial school boys. Trapshoot Here Sunday Central Point trapshooters will be out to keep their two point margin over Medford Gun club scattergunners when teams representing the C. P. Sports man's club and the local organi zation meet today at 10 a.m. at the Medford club grounds on the Crater Lake highway. Last Sunday the Pointer team took a 462 to 460 lead in com petiiton held at the Central Point club grounds. This annual challenge match brings together some of the bet ter trnnshnntprs nf this oart of the valley. Fifty birds will be shot at Sunday by 10 shooters qualifying for the teams in a 25 bird qualifying round.
