THE bureau of agriculture economies of the department of agriculture says we have a lot of eggs because ever since 1D40 the hens have been on a laying binar. If so he might as well follow the hedge hog and hole up until February 151 When the "auto-intoxication notion was at its height, (a few die-hards still stubbornly cling to the nonsensical idea) the word "toxin" was tossed around with great abandon. "Tox ins" formed in the bowel and sneaked off the reservation be fouling and ob fuscating every function and tissue of the body, accord ing to tne Dr. Bradv goofv ideas nrevalent on the subject. The public finally smartened up and recognized that the word was the stock in trade of the laxative boys. We don't see the word tox in In print nearly as often as we did previously. There are actually very lew toxins demonstrable as such which account for all the mis chief attributed to them. A real toxin is a thing with which to conjtire the "toxins' involved in the "auto-intoxication" ma larkev are purely imaginary. They were read into the act like .--.t..u. e ...al font "i.ocitnni(" and other gimmicks to explain something that couidn t oe ex plained. The tetanus bacillus which causes lockjaw, produces one of the most powerful toxins known. While most everyone knows that the spores of these bacilli Inhab it the bowels of lower animals, it does not seem to be generally appreciated that they can be found in the discharge from the bowel of at least every fourth human. Lockiaw or tetanus is a dis ease to which all warm blooded animals are susceptible. It is caused by the entry into the tis sues of the spores of the tetanus bacillus, often by totally un suspected routes. Puncturing the foot with a "rusty" nail is one example too well known by most people. It matters not at all whether the nail is rusty a clean one bearing spores is just as menacing as a rusty one. Tetanus has been acquired from dust blowing into an oper ating room ' and settling in an open surgical wound. Mind you, the dust itself does no great harm, it is the spores or full grown bacteria which "ride" the dust that create the damage. In- lants nave been Known to ac quire tetanus from invasion of the cut umbilical cord at birth. There are innumerable ways in which the infection gains entry to the body, but perhaps the most common is the "punctured wound. Tetanus toxin is so powerful deadly, that is that the tincst imaginable drop will kill a mouse within two hours. Once this toxin gains access to the human body, it creates a disease the mortality rate of which is at least half of what it was a cen-: lury ago when nothing was known of the actual nature of i the disease. Despite our great j knowledge of the disease today, ' any victim of it is in a very seri-; ous predicament. Humans can be immunized to this disease by two tiny injec tions, given under the skin, with two or three months intervening between injections. The sub- stance used in these injections is known as toxoid, which is de-1 rived from the toxin. In children, tetanus toxoid may be given to advantage in combination with whooping-cough or diphtheria toxin thus protecting the child against two diseases at the same time. The exact duration of the immunity thus conferred is not easily determined; it is good judgment to give an occasional "booster dose" particularly after an injury. In non-immunized persons, a "prophylactic" dose of tetanus serum, given by hypodermic in jection, will confer immunity for a week or ten days probably sufficient to "tide" one over aft er an injury. This mav be treat ed with due precautions. While toxoid rarely creates an unde sirable reaction, antitetanic ser um sometimes does. A person who has received a previous dose of serum is tested for "sensitivity' 'to the serum before a second dose is given. QUESTIONS tt ANSWERS Ara You Wonderlm? At certain stages it is sliehtlv Doisonous to cattle and is not good for any kind of stock. A small, flea-sized beetle eats Klamath weed and nothing else. Now we buy up the surplus with tax money and park it away in caves and the price stays up and people don't eat as many eggs as they oughta.
