Bartolomew, chict petty officer in charge of navy recruit ing in Medford, was notified this week that he has been awarded a navy unit commendation rib bon bar for his wartime service aboard the USS Sands, a con verted destroyer used to carry troops. The letter of transmittal said "The secretary of the navy has awarded the USS Sands the navy unit commendation for excep tionally meritorious service and heroism in action against enemy Japanese aircraft, shore batter ies, surface forces, submarines and mines in the Pacific cam paign during the following operations: Operations Cited "Tho hnttlo nf Rpnnpll island. Oregon Nurses Want 40-Hour Work Week Portland, Ore., Feb. 9 (U.R) Oregon's first collective bargain ing move by the nursing profes sion was on the record today fol lowing the Oregon State Nurses' association request for a 40-hour work week from all hospitals, clinics and industrial employers of nurses in the state. Oregon nurses now have a 44 hour week with a S210 a month minimum wage. They want the same wage scale for the 40-hour week, or an 11-cent hourly min imum wage boost. The nurses also asked admin istrators to create a "conference committee" at each hospital to iron out personnel problems. Assoc iation representatives said Washington, California, Ne vada, and Idaho nurses already have 40-hour work weeks. Furniture Damaged In Storage Trailer Fire Portland. Douglas MacArthur said to day that Japan had been given a green . light by the United States to open consular-type of fices in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Honolulu. The offices, which will not have diplomatic status, are de signed to handle trade, property and citizenship problems of Japanese nationals in the United States. They will be called Jap anese overseas agencies. Their staffs will have no dip lomatic or consular rank and will enjoy none of the immuni ties ordinarily accorded to for eign diplomatic or consular per sonnel accredited to the United States, MacArthur said. Portland's record low number of traffic fatalities in 1949 tied with Kansas City, Mo., in its popula tion class for percentage of de cline In such deaths, but city traffic officers said Portland was off to a bad start for 1950. Four deaths have occurred since January 1, while only one death was recorded during the first 39 days of 1949. Police officers said icy road conditions in Portland developed a bad habit in motorists, who now tend to drive through red lights and stop signs. During icy weather conditions last week, motorists often disobeyed lights in order not to be stalled on slick streets. Springfield Mill Employees To Vote Springfield, Ore., Feb. 9 iU.Ri A national labor relations board ordered election will be held here by the Springfield Mill company employees February 16 to determine whether Local 5246 of the International Woodwork ers should be dismissed as a bargaining agent. The election order came after a hearing was held on a petition submitted by an employee ask ing for decertification of the union as a bargaining agent. Testimony at the hearing showed the bargaining agent agreement had been violated when the union asked the com pany to alter terms of the con tract.
