Gardner, Ira Canfield, Wilbur Arnold, E. S. Langley and Grant Todd, and active pall bearers will be V. T. Wilson, Earl May, Vernon Brophy, Ray Coleman, F. C. Reimer and C. L,. Howard. Mr. Fick was born Feb. 24, 1878, in Jacksonville, a son of Peter and Henrietta Fick, both of whom were born In Germany. The deceased was united in marriage on Dec. 25, 1011, in Medford, to Nellie Williams, who had come to this community as a school teacher. She survives. He went Into the contracting and building business at the age of 19, and many of the schools and homes which he built are still standing. He owned and operat ed a hardware store in Jackson ville for 25 years, and in con nection with the store he operat ed a logging business. He sold out to Ray Coleman in 1932, and came to Medford where he went in the hardware business in the location which is now the Slam-per-Goff hardware. He retired in 1944. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, Medford; the AF&AM, for 43 years, be longing to Warren lodge No. 10; Roval Arch Masons No. 4, Jack sonville; Knights Templar, Ash land; Hillah Shrine temple, Ash land, and Adarel chapter No. 8, Eastern Star. Surviving, besides his widow, are a daughter, Mrs. Merle Sleep er Bend; a brother, Peter, and a sister, Mrs. Ida Wilson, both of Jacksonville; three nephews and a niece. King Of Hoboes Raps Taft-Hartley Law Portland, Ore., Feb. 7 U.R) Jeff Davis, king-elect of the na tion's hoboes, today told the cen tral labor council the Taft-Hartley law made it difficult for his constituents to obtain jobs as pickets. Davis said that, under the law, pickets were often asked what thpir "legal interest" was in the strike. He said "this Is cutting us out of some spare time Jobs." On other points of hobo wel fare, Davis said organization had given the bums higher social status. "In some states the bulls let us ride the rods in dignity now," he said. t : , --,.rsata. ... Ufa fa "no time" fii f .1 l l Try MAIL TMBUNE Bullets Used To Sound Curfew At Wedding Reception New York, Feb. 7 (U.R) A gun toting merchant marine officer used bullets to sound curfew on his daughter's wed ding reception early today Police jailed Lt. Cmdr. Theo dore Roman. 42. on charges of wounding Raul Font. 30, and his wife, when Font refused to go home at the end of the festivities. Police said Roman became angered because Font lingered in front of the house after the other guests departed, de manding more food and drink. The Fonts were cut by flying glass when bullets fired by the father, home on leave from Hawaii, hit the window of their automobile. State Highway Body May Withdraw Overpass Offer Portland, Ore., Feb. 7 (U.R) The Oregon state highway com mission said it would withdraw its $30,000 part in a share-the- cost overpass at a railroad graae crossing at Gardiner of the coast highway if lt is not accepted soon. The commission offered to put up $30,000 for the overpass if the Southern Pacific railroad company would put up the rest of the estimate) $150,000 cost. State Public Utilities Commis sioner George Flagg several months ago approved a grade crossing at Gardiner. But tiie highway commission opposed it and made its counter offer of construction of an overpass. The commission yesterday said the railroad company had not re plied to the overpass offer and that if it did not do so quickly, the commission would withdraw its offer: The commission also: 1. Heard a report from State Highway Engineer R. H. Baldock that 1038 overweight log-hauling citations were pending In 56 Justice courts. 2. Recommended that Commis sioner Flagg at least double the amount of property damage ana liability Insurance now .required of log haulers and other permit tees, present requirement is $5000 for property and $10,000 for personal damage. Council To Review Forest Land Sale Ashland, Feb. 7 A problem of long standing, the proposed sale of Ashland canyon timber lands to the forest service, will be considered by the Ashland city council tonight at a regular session. The question first arose more than a year ago, and solution has been delayed by legal questions, and division of opinion by coun cil members. City Attorney Har ry Skerry Jr. Is expected to give his opinion of the legality of the proposal at the meeting tonight. Another matter which has been before the council before is the proposal to redefine the duties of the utilities department and the city engineer. Other Items are expected to be largely routine, although the question of constructing a new fire hall may come up for dis cussion. Checker-Chess Club Sponsors Tournament Members of the Medford Checker and Chess club reported today that the checker tourna ment which the club sponsored at the Camp White domiciliary center last night was a "com plete success. . (J. Sluley was winner In the Group A competition, with J. Rogers runner up. A. M. Dunn took top honors In Group B, with Nick Lithadiotis second, and N. E.
