TWO MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, February 8, 1950 National Loop Sets 205 Games At Night New York, Fob. 6 U.R) Led by the St. Louis Cardinals, who have scheduled a record 34 nicht names including even their opening game, the National leasue today announced an un. precedented total of 205 after dark contests out of 618 on the overall schedule for the 1950 season. In the official schedule re leased by the league, it was re vealed that Die total even ex ceeded the American league fig- Mobilgas to Play Green's Champion of the second half in AAU Baskeioan league no. i. will be decided at the junior high gymnasium Tuesday night when Mnhileas currently undefeated in the second half, meets Green's confectionery, champions of the first half. Should Mobilgas win tomor row evening and defeat Crater Lake Lumber on February 15, the confectionery quintet and the gasolinemen will have to play to decide who will repre sent league 2 in the district AAU tournament scheduled to open February 21. A victory for Green's Tues day night would throw league 2 Into a three-way tie for first place with Prospect Joining Mo bilgas and the confectionery team In the top spot for the sec ond half. AAU games In league 1 Tues day night will send Butte Falls to Talent's gym. Tonight's schedule in the league finds American Fruit Slaving Crater Lake lumber at o'clock followed by Brownie's Plumbing and Heating against Mobilgas at 8:15 in the Junior high. GRADE SCHOOL CAOERS Junior varsity basketball games for Mcdford grade schools Tuesday will see Lincoln play ing at Roosevelt and Washing ton at Jackson with opening whistle scheduled for 4:15 p.m. Eagles Book Grants Pass EhrIc Point, Feb. 6 Conference-leading Grants Pass high will be seen in action on the Eagle Point high floor Tuesday at 8:15 p. m. when the youths coached by Shirley Callaghan try to get back into the South ern Oregon conference battle with an all-important victory. The Eagles currently are lead ing the J-D-J conference with an undefeated record but after two opening SOL victories they have had a little the worse of the argument so far. Giants Pass with its superior height and size, not to mention ability to floor two teams of rela tively equal strength, probably will be favorites tomorrow on the Eagles floor. However, Eagle Point has shown it can be a tough custo mer in view of its J-D-J record and early Southern Oregon con ference victories and undoubt edly will give the Cavemen a tough evening. Grants Pass is undefeated in District 4 and Southern Oregon conference con tests. A prelim at 8:45 p. m, will precede the varsity game. Keeping Pace All but two other National league clubs are keeping pace with the after-dark trend. The Braves will play 37 night games, the Phillies 30, the Pirates 25, the Reds 24, and the Dodgers 21. The Giants are holding the line against the "Inflation" stick ing to 14 or Just two games with each visiting club while the Cubs, of course, have none at all. The Washington Senators, with 43, and the St. Louis Browns, with 38, head the American league's night-ball partisans. The Nationals will waste no lime throwing the switch with the Cardinals opener against Pittsburgh on April IB, Twin Bills Vary The remainder of the opening day card has Boston at New York, Brooklyn at Philadelphia and Chicago at Cincinnati. Each team has 12 Sunday and Saturday dates but the number of scheduled double headers var ies from tho Reds' 11 to Brook lyn's one. The lone Dodger double dale Is on Memorial day and President Branch Rickey's policy Is to play a morning-afternoon double header and charge two admissions. "Now that I've finally won one, I'm thinking seriously of quitting the tournaments," said Harper after picking up $2,000 first prize money in the Tucson open with a 72-holc score of 267, a total of 13 strokes under par. Bear Versus Dusette Causing Excitement Billy Fox will bring hii 450- pound bear to town Thursday night and the bruin's fight to the finish match with Georges Dus ette at the armory, is causing no little stir among wrestling followers. The animal Is said to be much bigger (100 pounds, in fact) than Leo Welch's bear which was here several months ago and also is said to be con siderably meaner. Fox, well known here as a fast and clever wrestler, obtained the bear about a year ago in Canada and has devoted most of that time to teaching him the art of wrestling. Fox has offered Du sette a bonus of $100 if he is able to roll the animals shoulders to the mat for a one count, a feat which has been accomplished only twice. Fox will have his hands full in the one hour opening match when he takes on Jack Lipscomb, Chandler Upholds Signing of Petti New York, Feb. 6 (U.R) The Pittsburgh Pirates' right to sign 18-year-old Pitcher Paul Pettit for a bonus of $100,000 was up held today by Baseball Commis sioner A. B. Chandler. "There was no evasion of the rules by the Pirates," Chandler said. He added that the Pirates were free to sign the young southpaw because his class had graduated from high school. The signing had been chal lenged because Pettit, a high school phenomenon, was under contract as an "actor and ath lete" to Frederick Stephani of Hollywood, Cal. The league round-robin winds up next Friday to be followed on February 17 and 18 by the county tournament at Eagle Point.
