Professor of Botany Addresses Gardeners Thursday Afternoon A Urge number of Medford Garden club members assembled at the YMCA Thursday after noon for the February meeting, addressed by Dr. W. W. Wells, professor of botany at Southern Oregon college. In his topic, "China, Mother of Gardens," he gave a vivid word picture of ancient gardens, describing their balance, rhythm and symbolism. The speaker al so recalled many plants and shrubs which originated In China and are now commonly known in this country. The horticultural lesson was given by Miss Claire Hanley who spoke on begonias. Miss Hanley, a grower of begonias, gave a clear and concise description of begonia culture. Mrs. R. T. Nlchol spoke on local winter birds. Mrs. Raymond Reter was tea chairman assisted by Mrs. Nichol and Mrs. Henderson. Guests were Mrs. E. Pringle. Mrs. O. V. Hayes, Mrs. LeRoy Cline, Mrs. Lynn Cram, Mrs. Eugene Bar ham, Mrs. S. T. McCue and their daughter Patricia. Mrs. Scott expects a remain with them two or three months. Another son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Swain, have recently made Medford their home after spending sever al years in Central America. They are now operating the Holiday Inn on North Riverside avenue. VFW Auxiliary Veteran of Foreign Wars mem bers will meet for regular bus iness Tuesday. February 7 at 8 p.m. in the Veterans' hall, 42 norm front street. Hostesses for the evening are Mrs. W. S. Long and Mrs. B. B. Ramsey. Degree Team Captain Gives Evening Party For Members of Staff Mrs. Merle Ivie. captain of Olive Rebekah lodge degree staff. entertained members of tne sian at the IOOF hall Monday. Dur ing January the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs degree teams conduct ed five double Installation cere monies for valley lodges, The unique decorations, made by Mrs. Ivie, were in the nature of a miniature drill scene, with small figurines of each member of the team, In the final forma tion. The scene was compieiea by the figures of the degreo cap tain, dressed in black and lead ing the team and the figurine of the musician seated at the piano. Other decorations were in the valentine's theme. Mrs. Ivie was assisted by Mrs. Harold Tolle, Mrs. Donald Ivie and Mrs. Shlrrell Doty during the entertainment hour, and Mrs. Clayton Jacobsen assisted in serv ing refreshments. Songs and games were the di version of the evening, and a gift was presented the captain from stall memoers. Couples' Night Couples' night will be ob served by Reames chapter, Or der of Eastern Star, at the meet ing Thursday, February 9 at 8 o.m. Mrs. Frank Fawcett and Mrs. Lester Gilman are the committee on arrangements. Mrs. Hans Edwardsen will give the topic, and all members are asked to bring an article for the layette project. Wednesday Study Club Hears Book Reviews Wednesday Study club mem bers heard two book reviews at their Wednesday meeting at which Mrs. F. J. Newman pre sided. Mrs. Frances H. Cochran re viewed "The Rock Cried Out," written by Edward Stanley who was in early life a newspaper reporter and later editor of Esquire and Coronet. Mrs. Coch ran acquainted her audience with the early history of the Blennerhassett family, particu larly Harmon and his life, much of it spent in the Ohio valley. The book is a story of Revolu tionary days and contacts with Aaron Burr and other historical characters. In the beginning of Mrs. M. M. Morris' review on "Beulah Land," she stated that the book did not in any way live up to its title. She explained it as a rather sordid story written by Harold Davis, an Oregon author now living in Calfiornia. The story concerns a white man and his Indian mate who emigrated in the year 1851 from North Carolina to the then Indian ter ritory of Oregon. Daughters Of Veterans Install Year's Officers At Dinner And Meeting Elta Deouel Hubbs tent, Daugh ters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, held installation of officers at a recent meeting at the courthouse auditorium. The meeting followed a covered dish dinner at the home of Mrs. Genevieve Hyde, 1218 West 10th street.
