Fifty years that have vitally changed the fortunei of the United States and have shaken (hp wnrld constitute the open Ing subject of the volume, ac cording to the publishers. The years from 1900 on have been "fraught wun me greaieai rar sequences to the welfare of man kind," the almanac declares. Six Movements It recognizes six major move ments that carry their influence into the second half of the iuin century. They are: 1. The rise of world co-operation to avoid war, insure peace. 2. The Russian revolution and Its momentous results: "In 25 years Its policy of rule or ruin has become the greatest threat to free nations." 3. Rise of the United States as a world power. 4. Destruction of Germany, Austria-Hungary, sultanese Tur key and the rise of nationalism. 5. Decline of British imperial power. 6. Westernization of the far ast. The World Almanac, In Its sur vey, lists 34 republics established within 80 years, against eight abolished; it finds 21 monarchies abolished; six established. Not all of the new states have survived; some as still wobbly. Within that time American troops have been called upon to fight two major world wars and engage in 13 other punitive actions and occupations. S. Radio Operators At Mullan Pass CAA Station Undergo Rough Winter Mullan, Ida., Feb. 2 (U.R) If vou think the weather has been kind of rough lately, shed a tear for the CAA boys at Mullan Pass. The five radio operators at tho communications station 13 miles east of here and 6,124 feet up in the Rockies have long since settled down to a snow bound winter. Up to today, 99 Inches of snow had fallen. In 1937 the civil aeronautics administration established the Mullan Pass station for the bene fit of pilots flying across the northern Rockies. Principal duties of the operators Include collecting weather data and broadcasting it twice an hour during the day to flyers. Sits On Border The station Is unique In that it is located smack on the Idaho Montana border. In fact, It's pos sible for a couple of Ihc boys to play a game of checkers with one sitting in Montana and the other in Idaho. Getting up to the station from about October to late May In volves a good deal of physical exertion. You drive from Mul lan up a winding road for about 10 miles. Then you don skis or snow shoes and trudge a zig-zag course three miles tip to the sta tion, which takes up to three hours, depending on the shaoe you're in. Coming down t'.ie hill to the road takes about 10 minutes for a good skier. Has High Spota The trip Is not always with out its high spots. Whenever a new operator is assigned here he Is usually told about Jimmy Dar ton, or "Cougar Jim" as he's known as now. It presents the essentials of the White Paper on China, the Atlantic defense treaty, the re port of the Hoover commission on reorganization of the execu tive branch and decisions of the supreme court that affect the av erage man. That meant the boys had to put on snowshoes and take a shovel with them when they were ready to go to bod. They would shovel a path through the snow to open the door, slide into the house on their stomachs, shovel out the snow that cascaded In and slam the door. The same procedure was used to go to work In the morning. Now, however, the bunkhouse is adjoining the sta tion and reached from the In side. "It's really not so bad up here," the boys say. " w, w. 1- (vmil inw W, Read Unite For Unemployment Payments Made Salem, Ore., Feb. 2 (U.R) A new monthly record for unem ployment clalma and payments was made In January when $4,273,653 was paid to Oregon's unemployed, the state unem ployment commission reported today. The previous high was $4,188,- 215 in March, 1949. The Janu ary figure was 52 per cent above the December figure and 54.8 per cent more than for January of a year ago. Load Rising The local office claims load has been rising steadily since the year-end at the rate.of 6,000 a week, and officials expected still higher payments in Febru ary and March, unless there is an immediate change in the icy weather that has forced several lumbering and other plants to shut down. An all-time high of 70.136 claimants reported during the week ended January 27. This compared with 65.760 for the previous week, 45.875 for the last week of December and 63, 278 a year ago. The previous high of 69,323 was established last February. But last Febru ary nearly a third of the claim ants were veterans seeking re adjustment allowances. Current ly only 1,292 were found eligible under the GI bill of rights. Previous Mark Doubled Of last month's navments. $4,189,653 went to those cov ered by Oregon's unemployment law more than doubling any previous January in the commis sion's 13-year period. The Medford Mail Tribune Medford Officer Invites Visits To California Airbase ' Groups interested in visiting Fairfield-Suisan air force base and seeing the RB-36 have been invited to do so by Maj. George E. Andrews, former Medford resident, who is public relations officer for the California base. The invitation was contained in a letter from Andrews to the Mail Tribune. The RB-36 is the reconnaissance version of the B-36 airplane. Andrews suggested that when weather becomes better, air en thusiasts from Medford might ar range a flight to leave here in the morning, spend the day at the base and return in the eve ning. He stated that he could ar range clearance for landing on the base. Andrews requested that his suggestion be passed on to interested groups. ine officer stated that the ninth and fifth strategic: recon naissance wings are stationed at his base and that Fairfield-Suisan is the only air force base having the RB-36. The reconnais sance aircraft carry no bombs. There are now five B-36s on the base. The full complement will be 60. Andrews said that the two wings will be able to recon noiter anywhere in the world.
