To San Francisco Dwight Houghton, 512 Dakota avenue, nd John Weisbrod, Eagle Point, left yesterday afternoon by United Air lines for San Fran cisco where they will spend three or four days on busines. Bringing Family Hugh C. Coleman, Crater Lake Motor company, Is expected to arrive from Oakland, Cal Saturday, with Mrs. Coleman, their daugh ter Carol, 14, and son James 11. The family will make their home at 1216 East Main street and the children will enroll in the local schools. Other games and re freshments will be provided for members of the group who do not care to swim. Obituary FRANK MERRITT Remains of Frank C. Merritt, 42, Tacoma, Wash., who passed away at the V. A. domiciliary center Tuesday, were forwarded to Tacoma Wednesday for serv ices and interment there. Ar rangements were in care of Conger-Morris funeral home. Mr, Merritt was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Wilkeson, Wash., and had resided at Camp White since December. He was a veteran of World War II, enlisting Nov. 13, 1942, in Spokane, serving as a corporal with the 922nd engi neers. He was discharged May 22, 1944. in Spokane. Surviving are five children. Jimmy and Jobie, both in Alas ka; Jimmy, Gary and Lois, all in Seattle: his mother, Mrs. Ber tha Merritt, Tacoma; a brother, Paul. Tacoma; five sisters, Mrs. Loraine Smith. Seattle, Mrs. Rhoda Summers, Kelso, Wash.; Mrs. Dorothy Ridel, Shelton, Wash.; Mrs. Hadlyn McCay, Ta coma, and Mrs. Rosemarie V. Brookhart, Brewster, Wash. Sheridan Downey (D., Cal.) has accused Rep. Helen Gahagan Douglas (D., Cal.) of "conduct ing a campaign of personal bias and prejudice" in her race to capture his senate seat. His charge was prompted by Mrs. Douglas request that Dow ney outline his views on new pension proposals by George McClain, California pension leader. i Downey said in a telegram to Mrs. Douglas that he is unable to answer her request because it was "so garbled, ambiguous and incomprehensible." He challenged her to debate pensions with him publicly. He said that after months of campaigning it seemed to him that "you chose to indulge in a campaign of personal bias and prejudice rather than a broad and objective discussion." He is (Jealo (Human seal) Mo hawk, who is sprightly 72 years of age and who gave a sneak preview of his feats to 'Y' members here last night. Among his accomplishments are the world's record for staying under water for 5 minutes 12 seconds and for distance underwater swimming. His distance record is 7,113 feet, done in 24 minutes and 10 seconds, in 140-foot laps. His record for the underwater mile is 17:17, compared to the previous record of 23:53, Rtal Value Aside from these feats, of which he is modestly proud, Mo hawk feels that his demonstra tions have a real and practical value for novice swimmers. He is an accomplished floater and can float In any position. "Any one can learn to float," he said, "and it's important for safety that everyone knows how." He also features a variety of underwater maneuvers, which he describes as turning, darting and rolling all performed with the aid only of his arms and his hands. He doesn't use his legs, he says, accounting for his nick name, The Human Seal. Underwater speed swimming is not a recognized competition, he says, and rightly so, for it is too dangerous for ordinary per formance. Water pressures for extended periods can cause con siderable damage, he empha sized. But his demonstrations have extended over a 50-year period and he says he has suf ficient experience and control to eliminate most of the wrost haz ards. He will appear at the 'Y' pool for demonstrations at 10:30 a. m. and at 3 and 8:30 p. m. Friday, the last appearance in connec tion with family night, and at 10:30 a. m. and 3 p. m. Saturday. At the Friday night perform ance he will be assisted by Bill Tavlor, 'Y' diving instructor, who will spell him with exhibitions of diving. WELL SCRAMBLED Cranston, R. I. February 15 Hollywood, Feb. 2 (U.R) The movie that Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellinl made while their celebrated romance blos somed will open February IS at 18 theaters throughout the nation. RKO studio said "Stromboll," the film directed by Rossellinl on the picturesque Italian island of the same name, will be releas ed to 44 more theaters three days later. The Swedish actress stars in it. A studio spokesman said "about seven minutes" of film was cut from "Stromboll" after a recent preview In Long Beach, Cal., and some DroKen &ngnsn dialogue was made "more under standable." The preview audience, unpre pared for the style of production, was reported cool toward the picture. RKO Chief Howard Hughes said he would launch movie his tory's "biggest advertising cam paign" to promote "Stromboll," Miss Bergman's last film before she announced his retirement from the screen. Croarkin stated that he par ticularly needs a male ukelcle player, a boy and girl dance team, chorus girls and boys, a balancing team and vocalists, especially soloists.Talented indi viduals from all communities in the county are invited to try out. For Club Work Medford and Ashland Kiwanis clubs will present the second annual Kapers on February 20 and 21 at Ashland and February 24 and 25 at Medford. The Med ford club will use the proceeds for its boys' and girls' work, principally that for underpriv ileged youngsters. Croarkin represents Geller productions, Hollywood firm, and provides professional direc tion for the all-local talent show. A Geller man directed the 194S production. The 1950 show will be about two-thirds minstrel and one-third variety, with Kiwanians taking loading roles in the minstrel part. The previous February low was 13 degrees on the 7th, in 1929. Temperatures will continue to moderate, the bureau said. Bob Church, official in charge of the bureau here, said that a new storm ii moving south from Al aska, which may have a warm ing effect upon the Rogue val ley. It is pulling in wind from the southeast, which will be warmer, and covering clouds may come in later, he said, Ashland's minimum last night was four above, but at 8 a.m. the temperature had risen to 18 ahnvp indicalins that the mer cury might rise during the day.
