Government e n g lne e r are looking over the plan. It calls for a 1,400-mile track linking the United States with Its most northern outpost. In addition to the Russian angle, the engineers are bent on making Alaska more prosperous. The proposed line would fill sao between the Alaska railroad and rail lines in British Colum bia which connect with systems in the United States. The 81st congress directed President Truman to open ne gotiations with Canada for per mission to survey a possible route for the line. If permission is granted, the survey is to start at once. Canada Wants It Little difficulty Is expected In Retting Canadian permission and cooperation. Such a line long has been hoped for In western Canada. Premier Byron Johnson of British Columbia came to Wash ington during congressional de bate on the bill authorizing the survey. He said his province wanted the proposed line. American economists also have clumped for the line ever since the Industrial possibilities of Alaskan resources became ap parent. Surrey Necessary Actual construction of the line hinges on the outcome of the survey and a congressional appropriation to finance the job Current efforts to build the line were based on a desire to fortify the most vulnerable point on the continent against enemy invasion.
