Thousands of people would try to arrange to have letters sent them from China Communists Decide To Reform Ancient Alphabet Hong Kong (U.R) One of the more ambitious long-term pro jects to be attempted by the new communist government of China is to reform the Chinese langu age. It is a project which has de feated more than one conqueror in China's history. With an alphabet of more than 40,000 characters, several hundred regional dialects and an 80 per cent illiteracy rate for an estimated 475,000,000 popula tion, the immensity of tne tasK can be appreciated. It is not an uncommon sight to see two Chinese from dif ferent parts of the country con verse by writing down charact ers, being unable to understand each other's dialects. Scholars OrganUe Nevertheless, more than 100 language scholars met in Peking the other day and formed the All China Association for Reforming the Chinese Language, according to a Peking radio broadcast. They will attack tne propiem on four fronts: ttomanize tne Chinese language and simplify the characters; una a unmea dialect for all China based on the northern dialect: help na tional minorities reform their languages, and publicize the need for language reform. 10,000 Character! Needed Although some scholars and intellectuals know 40,000 Chin ese characters, only about 10.0UO are necessary for ordinary day-to-day usage. Most vernacular newspapers confine themselves to the latter figure. Contrary to popular belief, however, it is not the number of characters so much as the use of them in composition and the understanding of them in com bination that makes 'Chinese probably the most difficult lan guage in the world. This means that most indus tries and mrfst localities will average nearly as well as for 1949. It is very possible how ever that 1950 may be the best year for some years to come. It should be remembered that January 1940 enjoyed several stimulants which cannot indef initely continue. For instance. 1949 benefited from . a marked increase in military prepared ness. Also, in 1949, the first in stallment of Marshall Plan aid amounting to $5,000,000,000 was sent abroad, much of which helped U. S. industries.. 1950 will however benefit from the large amount of insur ance money to be rebated to G.I. men. There will also be some other wind falls; but the European aid money will be less in 1950. The farmers will have less money to spend in 1950. All told, general business for 1950 need not be much below 1949. We surely live in a great country. Great Need of Increasing Stimulants To Uphold Business Readers should, however, realize the great need of in creasing stimulants in order to hold business up to "normal'1 and prevent declines. Those who have administered to the chron ic sick, know that in order for the patient to avoid more pain the dose of bromide must be in creased. There is too much thought about getting free aid and too little about creating more goods.
