Roosevelt ior a forgery convic tion today laced bad check and embezzlement charges. Judge Norval K. Harris, co chairman with Singer Paul Robeson of a committee that protested the trial of 11 com munist leaders last summer, was Indicted yesterday by hi own grand jury. After studying the Indictment In court, Harris told the grand Jurors lhat "undoubtedly the re cent publicity over my stand on civil rights had a lot to do with this." Funds Appreciated Prosecutor John K. Purcell said the indictment charged that Harris appropriated a $100 check lent through his office as an alimony payment to a divorcee. The indictment charged, fur ther, that Harris tried to cover the alleged embezzlement by is suing a check for $150 on his own bank, in which he had in sufficient funds. Harris denied the charges. "I hope you have lived up to your oath and conducted your investigation without malice or ill feeling toward anyone," he told the grand jurors. Seems Strange "It seems strange to me that the grand jury should meet, de liberate a week and then return indictments only against the judge of the circuit court." Harris disqualified himself at Purcell's request, and the prose cutor said he would ask the Indiana supreme court to appoint a special judge.- Harris, a democrat, took office a year ago after his election to a six-year term. Phone2-2479 24 HOUR FREE DELIVERY Phone Nights 2-2701 Mrs. Belle Milton, Early Settler 01 Evans Creek, Dies Rogue River, Jan, 28 Death brought to a close the long and colorful life of another pioneer of Evans Creek when Belle Mil ton, age 94, died January 23, at her home on West Evans Creek. She was born at South English, la., in 185S. She and her hus band, the Rev. William Milton, moved to Oregon in 1889 and settled on West Evans Creek near the site of the swinging bridge, where for many years the Rev. Milton ranched and ministered to the spiritual needs of the settlers. The Milton ranch was one of the first to be irrigated under the "Old Mill" ditch in the early days. Though fire destroyed, in recent years, the old two-story house that was home to their nine children, some of the orig inal apple trees and parts of the rose garden remain and are carefully sanded by the present owners, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Shep pard, who fully appreciate the quaint varieties of the old fash ioned roses which Belle Milton planted around the door of her home when she was young woman. Rose In Lapel Her daughters tell of the Rev. Milton plucking one small per fect pink rose from a certain bush in Belle's garden to wear in his laDel each Sunday morn ing through the long years of his ministry. And Belle's garden furnished rose cuttings for the homes of the young couples who were married by the Rev. Mil ton as well as the brides' bou quets. I he deceased leaves live daughters, Mrs. Lillie Dennis, iViiss Ethel Milton, Mrs. Ella litaamrlm Mr mil nnlr nf Rogue River, and Mrs. Annie Owings of Central Point. There are two sons, James Milton of Homedale, la., and Albert Mil ton of Grants Pass. There are 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were to be held today at 2 at the Church of God, with interment in Rogue River cemetery. Twelve Local Men Join Air Forces Twelve young Rogue valley men are en route to Lackland air force base, San Antonio, Tex., for 13 weeks of basic training, to be followed by specialized training on-the-job-training or di rect duty, it was reported today by T-Sgt. Gene F. Davis, com mander of the army and air force recruiting station here. The men left Medford in a group last Sunday morning, seen off by their parents. The twelve, in addition to those already en listed, make a total of 21 men who have entered the air force this month through the Medford slation. Men Named Those in the group Included Victor F. Kasser, Ashland; Char les T. Parks, Drew: William Carl Carlson, Eagle Point; John Char les Trimble, Central Point; Cor nelius Lawrence Sullivan, Med ford; Paul David Porter, Trail; Peter Dee Flury, Eagle Point; Bradley Gordon Wood, Talent; Elmer Richard Gascon, Gold Hill: Robert L. DeLisle, Ash land; Eugene Alvin Town, Med ford, and Richard Owen Os borne, Trail. Three of the men have had former military experience. Trimble as a sergeant who spent five months overseas, and who is re-entering the armed forces as a corporal; DeLisle, who was a sergeant, and Wood, who was a pfc, both of whom are enlisting as privates. Sergeant Davis said there will be several openings during Feb ruary, and those interested In an army or air force career were urged to get in. touch with him. NLRB election Being Held Here Today Non-seasonal workers at Bear Creek orchards and Southern Oregon Sales, Inc., are balloting throughout today in a NLRB supervised bargaining agent elec tion in the county courthouse. They will decide whether the Teamster, Cannery and Fruit Packing workers, local 962-A, AFL, shall represent them for purposes of collective bargain ing at the two plants. Several e o u n t y republican leaders have Indicated that they may attend. In addition to hear ing annual reports, members of the club are expected to talk over plans for the coming elec tions. Officers of the club have in vited all young republicans in the county to attend. The organ ization was particularly active during the election year 1948 when it was re-activitated.
