'Super Race' Of Douglas Fir Being Developed In Area Portland, Jan. 26 A "super race" of douglas fir trees Is be ing planned for the west coast region. Calling it a "real milestone in American forestry", W. D. Hag enstein, chief forester, in his re port before the annual meeting of the Forest Conservation com mittee of Pacific Northwest For est Industries here Thursday, said the douglas fir industry in 1949 made forestry history when it adopted a region-wide seed certification policy for assuring superior trees from 'artificial re forestation. "Adoption of this plan for genetic forestry which was fol lowed by industry in western Washington and Oregon in 1949", Hagenstein said, is a 'first' for the United States, although Europe has been growing trees from certified seed for 100 years." Certified Seed Only "The Forest Industries tree nursery, at Nisqually, Washing ton, which produces seedlings for use through the douglas fir re gion," Hagenstein said, , "will hereafter use only certified seed. Each company receiving trees from the nursery is supplying its own seed, paying particular at tention to place collected, eleva tion, form of parent trees, local climate and proximity to area needing artificial reforestation.' The industry's nursery com mittee is the certifying agency for superior tree seed and keeps systematic records on each lot so that its progeny can be fol lowed and studied, the forester reported. Old Watch Found By Garbage Driver Mrs. L. F. Eichendorf, Holly apartments, today had nothing but praise for City Sanitary serv ice when one of its drivers, Jack Hendrickson, Gold Hill, return ed an heirloom platinum wrist watch set with diamonds. Mrs. Eichendorf said the watch was inadvertently tossed into the garbage can a week ago with waste paper and package wrap pings. She notified the sanitary service which questioned its drivers as they came in from their routes. And sure enough, Hendrickson had spotted the glittering watch in the midst of a load of lettuce leaves and orange peels. It was returned to its owner yesterday. Food Prices Down In Western Cities, Statistics Show San Francisco, Jan. 26 (U.R) Food prices tumbled in Decem ber in every major far western city, the U. S. department of la bor's bureau of labor statistics reported today. In Portland, Ore., food prices fell to two-year lows last month, the bureau reported. 100 Used As Normal The agency uses the figure 100 to represent the "normal" period of 1935-1939. Based on that scale, the food price index for various western cities in December included: Portland 206.3, Seattle 203.1, Salt Lake City 196.6, Denver 196.2, San Francisco 210.1 and Los Angeles 197.2. -The December national food index was 197.3. Below 1948 Portland's December index was 7.7 per cent below December. 1948. Compared with 1H4B, meat prices decreased 12.3 per cent in 1949, egg prices down 29 per cent, fats and oils 24.5 per cent, cereals and bakery products 3.3 per cent, dairy products 6:5 per cent, fruits and vegetables 0.9 per cent and sugar and sweets 4.2 per cent. Only important in crease during the past year was coffee up 40.1 per cent over Dec. 1948. Ex-Officer Sentenced To Life In Prison Belton, Tex., Jan. 26 !U.PJ Sam Smithwick, former deputy sheriff sentenced to life impri sonment for the murder of News caster W. H. (Bill) Masen, ate breakfast today with a "clear conscience." A jury which had deliberated three hours and 42 minutes re turned a verdict of guilty of murder with malice and recom mended the sentence yesterday. Ore., Jan. 26 (U.R) The state unemployment com pensation commission sent out its five-millionth state unem ployment benefit check Wednes day to a Portland recipient. The check marked a total of more than $76,088,000 sent out by the commission since its in ception in January of 1938. Besides state funds the com mission since the war has issued federal funds to unemployed veterans totaling $27,400,000. Peterson said he hoped that a circuit court decision kill ing Oregon's butter grading law would cause manufacturers to place new emphasis on selling improved quality name brands. Peterson yesterday told the Oregon Dairymen's association here that the grading law gen erally had been abused by manu facturers who upgraded butter and made little attempt to im prove quality. He said the law could not be enforced because grading was based on expert opinion and dist rict attorneys were reluctant to take cases into court. The butter grading law was declared invalid last week in a circuit court decision at Salem. Peterson said that with the law dead he looked to manufacturers to place new emphasis on selling brand names with improved quality.
