There fore, I come among you today to state that Leonore Lonergan, the smart-looking, witty and tal ented blonde teen-ager now fea tured in the revue titled "Alive and Kicking," will some day be considered as great a musical show star as Ethel Merman. Can I say more? Right now what the versatile Miss Lonergan offers in her current engagement is in itself worth double the price of admission to the show. That it is difficult for a widow with three young sters to find a spouse there is no doubt. However, it is something frequently accomplished. In fact, I know of a widow with six young children who acquired a high-grade husband. She married a widower left with eight chil dren. After this widow and wid ower were married they had seven children of their own. Yes, ma'am. They had a family of twenty-one children. Two of my favorite names for newspaper are the Burling ton Hawkeye and the Tombstone Epitaph . . . There was once a ditty entitled "I Want to Look Like Lillian Russell." Perhaps it could be revised a little and re vived"with the title "I Want to Look Like Jane Russell." Or maybe it could be titled "Oh, Papa, I Want to Look Like Hedy Lamarr." " That Ranch Again I am moved to say I believe the most brilliant of all my brilliant ideas was that of my acquiring a ranch. It seems to me most farmers and ranch ers could appropriately sing ev ery day that ditty titled "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." Their Santa Claus, is of course, from Washington, D. C. This comment inspired by noting that now the government is contemplating subsidizing growers of walnuts and almonds. The policy of sub sidizing potato growers con tinues. I could grow walnuts, al monds and potatoes on my ranch as an aid to eliminating my fi nancial difficulties. Then I would have nothing to worry about but my horses. Gold Hiil Gold Hill, Jan. 23 Mrs. Frank Carter and Charles Carter re turned from Eugene January 20. They had been called to Eugene by the serious illness ot Mrs. Carter's sister, Mrs. Harsh. Mrs. Harsh is much improved but will be confined for a time to a convalescent home after dis missal from the hospital. The Carters plan to return to Eugene in about a week to visit Mrs. Harsh again. William Rooney of Eugene was a visitor In Gold Hill over the week-end. He is a student at the University of Oregon. Mrs. George Smith reports that their barn collapsed due to the heavy snow last week. A steer was in the barn when it fell but was rescued and seemed to be all right. Some of the hog shelters were also destroyed but no damages resulted to the pigs. Captain and Mrs. Richard M. Thompson and two children vis ited from January 12 to 15 with Mrs. Thompson's parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Quakenbush and Bart. Captain Thompson has been in training at Camp Gordon, Ga., and at it. Belvoir, Va. He has been as signed to duty in the South Pa cific area where he will soon be sent. Mrs. Thompson and two children will reside in Oakland, Cal., during his absence. Vaughn Quakenbush, in the Community hospital for a week or so with a liver ailment, is re ported improved In health. Due to his Illness and the weather the Dardanelles was closed but is now open for business again. Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Quaken bush of the safe arrival of their daughter, Mrs. W. O. Evacuees shown on the opposite bank are waiting to be removed to higher ground. Shawneetown, one of many Midwestern cities periled by growing Hoods, is dry but surrounded by water. A Nichols' Worth of Comment On By HARMAN United Press Washington, Jan. 23 (U.R) There's a patent lawyer here who starts a new client off with this quotation: "The differ ence between a genius a n d a lunatic is that a genius is a successful lun atic." Most of them don't hard way, but I try to play square " Crowell, dapper and youngish looking, has guided many to fame and steered a lot more off the wrong track. The minimum for getting a new clothes pin or mouse trap or anything else patented is $240. It is broken down like this: The search record cost is $15. That is the cost of clerks who look into patent office files to see if anything like your inven tion has been patented. Chances are 100 to 1 it has been. The fee for filing for a patent is $30. The average for having a draw ing made is $15. The attorney will charge you at least $150, Japan, where she joined her hus band, Lt. W. O. Neville, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Neville of this city. Mrs. Neville reports many interesting things about the people of Japan. She went to Beppu, Figunae, where Lt. Neville was sent on special duty, and was the only guest in a large Japanese hotel. She sat on pil lows instead of chairs. American guests were given beds, a great concession on the part of the Japanese. About 10 servants lined up in front of her at meal time to wait on her and each time an eating utensil was laid down one of them took it away to be washed. They loved doing the laundry for the American lady." She reports that nothing can be laid down that it isn't picked up and taken away to be washed. Mrs. Neville reported a very full and happy New Year's pro gram of parties and dancing and festivities for wives of Amer icans there. She will remain in Beppu untrl Lt. Neville is through with the mission on which he was sent. School remained in session all during the week in spite of the stormy weather. The buses were able to make most of their com plete rounds but those who could not be reached enjoyed vacations. A good number of parents and friends attended the basketball game with St. Mary's at the St. Mary's gym Friday night. The team is improving in teamwork and basket shooting. Because of the basketball games, the teen-age dances, spon sored by the IOOF lodge, were not well attended. It is possible they will be discontinued until after the hoop season. Mr. and Mrs. George Browncll and children spent the past week in Santa Monica. Cal., visiting Mr. and Mrs. Browncll Sr. Mr. Brownell decided to make the visit while the mine was closed down due to the snow. Milton Steinmetz has gone to Richland, Wash., whire he is employed. En route he visited in Portland with his son, David, and Mr. and Mrs. R. H., Moore. Miss Antoinette Zirl of Chi cago. 111., has been a visitor at the home of Mrs. Lillie MacKay and her son, Richard. Miss Zirl and the MacKays are long-time friends. Miss Laurene Koll and her cousin returned last week after visiting her brother, Leonard, and family at Coos Bay, She said the storms there were plentiful and with car trouble the trip wasn't so good. I put the money on deposit, but to this day I have n't heard another word from him. Neither have I heard of p.nybody inventing an airplane backing up to gel forward." Seeks Fool-Proof Ashtray One of Crowell's clients Is a man who is trying to invent an ashtray that is fool-proof. One that will always keep mo ashes inside the tray and at the right time snuff out a burning cigar ette. The man has paid fee after fee on numerous false starts on the invention, but so fnr he has not come up with anything that could get through the tough patent examiners. Or make sense to Crowell. I asked'the lawyer about all of the complicated language used to describe patents. Two or three "saids" in one sentence, and such. A trade secret, he said. So that if you ever have to appear to defend your client you can confuse the judge. "Describe it," he advised, "so that it is utterly confusing, but at the same time make it so clear that when you argue it be fore a judge you can tell him it means what it docs not and get him to believe it. Is that clear?" Maritime Chairman Talks To Officials Portland, Ore., Jan. 23 U.R) Maj. Gen. Philip B. Fleming, chairman of the U. S. maritime commission, conferred with oPrt land and Astoria maritime offi cials today following his delayed arrival by train from San Fran cisco. Fleming and Joseph K. Car son Jr., west coast commission member and former mayor of Portland, were among hundreds of passengers reaching here last night aboard the Southern Pa cific's Cascade.
