Pels Here Tonight At 8:15 Medford nlor high's baiketball team will ba out attar Its third conteranca and diitrict 4 victory oi tha 1949-50 season whan it takes on an old-time rival Klamath Falls at 8 p.m. today on tha local floor. Two preliminaries will precede the vanity conflict tonight with the Klamath tophi playing the Black Tornado sophi at 5:30 and then the reipective junior clan quintets playing at 6:30. Coach Bob Newland of the Tiger Cubi squad said. Other conference-district batkeiball claihei thif evening will find Eagle Point at Central Point and Grants Pais at Ashland with the former also counting in the J-D-J conference. NO TORNADO GAME SCHEDULED SATURDAY Medford's cagers will be idle Saturday evening but three other conference-district tiffs are on schedule as Klamath plays at Cen tral Point, Ashland goes to Eagle Point and Karby plays at Grants Pass. A prelim at 6:30 will precede the varsity tilt In all these games. ' The Tornado squad continues to show improvement with each drill under Coach Frank Roelandt although smoothness of attack and general ball-handling and passing is still not up to what it was at the end of last season when Medford won tha district cham pionship tournament. This week the local youths continued to drill different types of attack and defense to ba ready for anything an opponent might use whether man-to-man defense, for instance, or a fast-break of fense. Practicing different kinds perhaps has slowed playing in general. VICTORY FOR MEDFORD IMPORTANT ONE A vlriarv for the Tornado definitely will keen the local youths in the thick of the fight for district and Southern Oregon confer ence honors. The game on the basis of games played both teams to date should be closely fougnt. Jack Morris and Connie Holsgang probably will start at guards, Don Denman at center and Larue Smith and Bob Shores at for wards. Holsgang is about recovered from his sickness of last week and Shores knee is much oeiter man earner mis season. AAU Basketball Slate Monday Announced AAU Basketball lcafiue games scheduled in round 2 for Mon day evening were announced to day by president Hugn Williams as he also reported results of last night's clashes at the junior high gym. The schedule for the rest of round 2 in both leagues will be given Sunday. Monday evening in league 1 It will be Talent town team vs. Medco at 7 p. m. and Timber Products vs. Crazy-Swayze about 8:19 in the junior high gym. Phoenix town team will travel to Rogue River and Butte Falls to Jacksonville for other league tilts Monday. No League 2 Games There will be no league 2 games Monday evening but this loop will resume its schedule Wednesday at the junior high. Green's confectionery and American Fruit quintets In the local AAU basketball run up victories last night nt the junior high gym with the former down ing Crater Lake Lumber 66 to 34 and the fruilmcn edging Brownie's Plumbing and Heat ing 44 to 36. Green'a led but 16 to 14 at the first quarter but built it to 32 to 20 at the half and 47 to 29 at the third period. Tex Gutlin with 23 points and Chuck Jandrcau with 11 paced Green's In scor ing. D. C. Mills tullicd eight and Bill Nccly seven to lead the lumbermen. Second game of the evening Linesman Figures Army Stake at $88,200 found Brownie's ahead 13 to 4 at the first quarter and 17 to 13 nt the half but the fruitmen were ahead 27 to 26 at the third pe riod. Humphrey tallied seven and C. Barlow six in the final quarter to help give American Fruit a victory. Garrison tallied 14, C. Barlow 13 and Humphrey 11 to pace the winners in scoring wnue itiizen pushed in 10 and Kelly seven to pace the losers. Last night's games at the jun ior high were the first ones in the second round. Volley Ball Loop Organized Here An eight-team cltv vollev ball loop has been organized and play will be on Thursdays startine January 26. according to Robert Jones, YMCA secretary. The schedule Is being drawn up. There will be four games each Thursday, two each at the "Y" gym and the senior high gills' gym. The hours will be 7 and 8:30 p. m. Local School Gyms to Open On Saturday Forecast of better weather for Saturday compared to last week was exnected today to boost the attendance at local school gyms where boys of the city will be welcome to play tomorrow from 10 a. m. to noon and from 1 to AbcLt 340 boys went to the senior high, junior high, Jackson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Washing ton school gyms last Saturday de spite the bad weather. Washing ton school had the largest total attendance with 82. including 43 in the morning and 39 in the aft ernoon. Lincoln School Smallest number of boys at tending was at Lincoln school, where 11 came in the morning and 29 in the afternoon. Tomorrow Lee Ragsdale will be in charge at the senior high, Chief McLean at junior high, Roy Gilbertson at Washington, Rob ert Baccus at Jackson. Boys were reminded that street shoes must not be worn on the gym floors but that sneak ers or stocking feet are all right. Roosevelt Posts Second Victory Roosevelt's basketball team took advantage of mistakes by Lincoln's quintet and showed a sharper passing and Dan-nan-dllng attack to ring up its sec ont local grade school league victory of the season yesterday on the Roosevelt floor. The final score favored the Roughrlders 31 to 25 and they were ahead 14 to 6 at the half. Last week Friday the Roosevelt five had topped Washington school 35 to 11. Washington stenrjed into the victory column yesterday with a 27 to 11 decision over Jackson at Jackson's gym. SOC Center Keith Wade League Scoring Drops Keith Wade, rangy and high scoring center for Southern Ore gon college, dropped to sixth place in the Far Western confer ence point making race last week when the Red Raiders were Idle as for as conference basketball games are concerned. Wade in two conference tilts has made 13 floor goals and as many free throws, for a total of 39 points and an average of 19.5 points per game. This is the best average in the league. Gordon Neidcigh with a 24 total and John Barger with 23 arc ranked as 11th and 12th. Three County Class B Games Slated Tonight Three games In the count B school basketball conference will be played in the valley tonight Instead of the usual four because weather conditions will prevent Phoenix from playing Prospect at Prospect's gym. Slated for tonight will be Gold Hill at St. Mary's (Med ford), Butte Falls at Jackson ville and Rogue River at Talent. All varsity tilts will start at 8:15 following a 6:45 prelim. "Tonights conference tilt at Prospect was postponed to a date to be announced later when Prosnect school officials said there had been no school there this week and therefore its play ers had not been practicing. Saturday evening three bas ketball games will be played on the grade school gym floor at Phoenix starting at 6:30, when the Phoenix and Howard grade school quintets play a conference game. Phoenix high jayvees will play the Medford junior high varsity starting at 7:30 and an hour later the Phoenix high varsity quintet will take on the Southern Ore gon college junior varsity. The Medford Tunior high varsity or ninth graders are undefeated in two seasons. Phoenix AAU Hoopsters Defeat Medco 35 to 33 Phoenix. Jan. 20 Phoenix town team opened the second half of the AAU Basketball league season with a 35 to 33 victory over Butte Falls, one of the top teams in the final first half standings. The score was tied 11 to 11 at the first quarter, Butte Falls led at the half 23 to 20 and at the third quarter 29 to 28. Germer, with 12, and Skinner, with 11 points, led the Phoenix scoring while Stephenson caged 12 and Bob and Bill Rogers eacn got eight to lead B. F. Former Local Dodgers Hurler With Vancouver Harry Nygaard, former Med ford Dodgers pitcher in the Far West league and more recently with Idaho Falls, Ida., in the Pioneer league, has been pur chased by Vancouver, B. C of the Western International league, it was learned today. Nygaard, who didn't show loo much when hurling for the Medford class D club in 1948, did well with Idaho Falls in the class C league last season, re ports from there said. CENTRAL WASH. Jan. 21 Cen tral Point junior high school's eighth grade basketball team made It a clean sweep of its series with Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland for the second time in three years by toppling Grants Pass eighth grade quin tet 26 to 13 last night. . The Pointers still have anoth er series with the three schools to play later in this season. Carrigan with 13 points and Bohnert who tipped in five led the C. P. eighth graders while Murry was credited with six to lead Grants Pass. Central Point led at the half 13 to 3. Second game last night at the C.
