In a small mid-town drug store which had an elaborate smorgas bord bar, Brad Runyan met a woman who insisted her hus band intended to kill her. Her hunch was an altogether sound one and word of her death I reached the corpulent connois seur of crime within 24 hours. Moreover, someone got to the doctor who signed the death cer tificate and eliminated him, thus cutting down evidence practical ly to the point of non-existence. How Brad succeeded in trapping the dual killer will be told on the ABC broadcast of "The Fat Man" at 8 p.m. over Station KYJC. A vicarious journey to the North Pole, with the Nelson boys freezing their dad in intrepid in terrogation, highlights "The Ad ventures of Ozzie and Harriet' in an episode called "The Ex plorers" over Station KYJC at 9 o'clock tonight. Want Want Juke Box Review Juke Box Review Juke Box Review News Downey Sign Off Tax Appraisal Maps Received By Region Chairman Gold Hill, Jan. 20 The co ordinating chairman of the tax valuation protest committee of enirm r-uiui, nusue rviver aim Gold Hill, Mrs. Daniel Stewart, has received tax appraisal maps from Harry J. Loggan, supervis ing appraisal engineer of the state tax commission at Salem. The maps are to be used by the committee in these towns in their work of making recommenda tions for equalizing tax valua tions in their respective commu nities. A letter to Mrs. Stewart states in part: "This will confirm our conversation regarding future meetings with your committee. After you have studied the maps and arrived at conclusions will you notify C. A. Meyers, Jack son county assessor, when you would like to have the meeting with S c 1 a n d e r and myself. He will advise us and we will try to set a date that Is mutually satisfactory. I think that we should meet with the sub-committee from each town first to discuss equalization within the town. After that, we could meet with the entire committee. This meeting should probably be held not later than March 13." Douglas Buckle, chairman of the Rogue River committee, in formed Mrs. Stewart that the Rogue River map was not com plete, that many pieces of prop erty in that town did not appear on the map. The ommissions have been reported so the map may De completed as soon as possible. A meeting with members of the state tax commission will be held as soon as the committee completes its work. VIRUS PNEUMONIA P So much has been said about virus pneumonia recently, that the suspicion has been raised that this is a new disease, and one which has been gain ing dominance because of the action of the drugs against the bacterial diseases. Inso far as human and animal in fectious diseas es are concern ed, the great reservoir of the Dr. Brady infection lies in the living tissues. A secondary reservoir results from the con tamination of water and food stuffs by germs from living tissues. With the thought In mind that the germ world is held in check by antibiosis, natural enmity between germs if the bacterial diseases are suppressed in the living tissues by the deadly ac tion of the antibiotic drugs which have little or no effect upon viral diseases, then the viral diseases should be free to assume dominance. There can be no doubt but that an enormous amount of factorial infection has been suppressed throughout the entire world by the action of the sulfa drugs and antibiotics. The gross effect of this is to diminish the extent of the infection in the original res ervoir. The word reservoir, in this instance, meaning the sum total of all infected human and animal tissues. Many disease-causing germs may live outside the body tissues for a long time and endure and survive freezing and high tem peratures. Usually, however, most of the germs which cause disease in the human soon lose their virulence, if not their lives, when removed from a source of nutrition and warmth, Peculiar ly, while most germs can be grown in test tubes, viruses ap pear to grow only in living tissues. While sulfa and antibiotic drugs suppress infection by bac teria in the individual, they also serve to limit the possibility of spreading the infection to other individuals. There is no way of telling how many others are sav ed from infection by suppress ing injection in one inaiviauui. Who can say how many flies are denied existence because one is killed? Among others, there are two interestins points of difference between pneumonia and virus pneumonia, une Is mat mc suua and antibiotic drugs have little or no effect upon virus pneu monia, although highly effective against pneumonia. The other is that while usually a dominant strain of the germ causing the pneumonia can De isolated irom the air-passages of the pneu monia victim, the germ content from the air-passages or tissues of the victim of virus pneumon ia is no different from that of a person free from infectious disease. Descriptions of disease corres ponding to virus pneumonia have been recorded in medical literature for the past fifty or sixty years, although not by this name, and without suspicion that they were caused by a virus. The apparent increase in virus pneu monia may also be accounted for in part by the fact that the dis ease is now much more readily recognized for what it is. Many of the victims of virus pneumonia have no suspicion that they have a pneumonia pro cess in their lungs. It is surpris ing at times how much lung in volvement exists without signs or symptoms indicative of it. X ray examination is almost indis pensable in the diagnosis. For tunately, very fe,w persons die of virus pneumonia. There is no specific treatment for the disease. A wide range of measures have been employed without appreciable effect. Need less to say, even a mild case should be under a doctor's super vision. A severe case requires no ureing. My own case, last No vember, was comparatively mild, but when the doctor began to break gently the news that I'd be better off in a hospital, I said Oke. let s go. I managed to stand six days of it, under the care of three special nurses ana inree regulars, who made me so com fortable that I felt ashamed of myself and persuaded the doctor to let me go home to the nurse who has cared for mc heaven knows why since Topsy was a colt. The heavy snows are providing an unusual menace to deer herds in the Tillamook burn area, Charles A. Lockwood, Oregon state game director, said today. Lockwood said the deer were in no danger of starvation as there was ample browse for them. But, he said, the animals were in a state of exhaustion from plowing through deep drifts. Field agents have reported starving pheasants and quail in some sections of the state, Lock wood said. He asked that sports men and others interested place grain in clearings for the birds to feed on.
