California Attorney General Given $75,000 After Staying Of Racketeer Bugsy Siegel, Witness Tells Court Fresno, Cal., Jan.' 19 (U.PJ California Attorney General Fred N. Howser received $75,000 when Racketeer Benjamin (Bug sy) Siegel was slain, a witness testified yesterday in the con spiracy trial of two former How ser aides. County Detective Amll Demes, a government witness, said James T. Mulloy, former Long Beach bookie and an earlier wit ness, told him: "I can make or break Howser. I can prove Howser got $75,000 for the Siegel killing." Possession of Pearson This information, Demes said, is in a file now in possession of Columnist Drew Pearson. Demes was called to testify in the conspiracy trial of Walter Portland Feels Impact Of Peace Problems Portland, Ore., Jan. 19 (U.R) Portland's lady mayor, Mrs. Dor othy Lee McCullough Lee, said today in her annual report to the city council that the year of 1949 was a transitory one for the city in that it "felt the full impact of the peacetime problems cre ated by the enormous increase in its population and its rapid economic growth." She estimated the city's pop ulation by the end of 1949 at 433,000, a gain of 6,000 for the year. Mrs. Lee presented a detailed discussion on Portland's finan cial difficulty, which she partly blamed on the monopoly of rev enue sources by the state and federal government. On the brighter side, the re port said 60 new industries were started in Portland with a total investment of more than $2, 000,000. In addition, said the re port, 70 businesses spent a total of $4,500,000 on expansion pro grams. In 1893 Cleveland said, "While people should support their government, its functions do not include the support of the people." Lentz and Robert Franklin. They are accused of trying to tamper with Mulloy, a witness in a $300, 000 libel suit Howser has filed in Washington, D. C, against Pearson. Howser filed suit when Pear son broadcast that the attorney general received payments of $1,200 from a Long Beach bookie in 1946. Pearson based his re marks on a statement from Mul loy. The prosecution contends that Lentz and Franklin, the defend ants in this trial, offered Mulloy $18,000 to repudiate his state ment in favor of Howser, Viiited Ex-Congroisman Earlier, Mulloy told how he visited former congressman B. W. Gearhart and told Gearhart he wanted to contact Howser. His purpose, he said, was to let Howser know he was willing to repudiate the Pearson broadcast. Before the visit, however, Mul loy said a mysterious "fat man" told him Howser would pay $25,000 to change his version of the bookie payoff. Among the club members pres ent were Mrs. W. E. Haskins, president, and Mrs. Florence Lance, chairman of the hospital committee for Camp White. Weather conditions which add ed to the hazards of night driv ing reduced the number of Med ford people who usually attend this affair. Harvey Wells, society presi dent, said if persons could find a little time between tasks of shoveling snow off the sidewalk and shoveling fuel into the fur nace to scatter a few table scraps around their lawns, the birds would appreciate it. Wells said warmed pans of drinking water also would be well received by the birds. ' The average for 2,425 boxes of No. 1 boscs sold on January 16 hit a new high for the season of $5.84 a box. The average dur ing the previous week was $5.15 and $4.66 on January 3. Around 2,000 boxes of fancy Oregon anjous averaged $4.55 on January 16, also a new sea sonal high for this variety. Ho broke loose and swallowed them anyway. She tried to tele phone a doctor, but he tore the phone from the wall. Shortly after, he collapsed and died of a heart attack, brought on by the exertion of the strug gle with his wife.
