rOUHMEPrOBD (OREGON) Bill Bowerman Tells Oregon Hope In Track In Letter to Tribune Eugene, Jan. 18 (Special to Mail Tribune) "Our (track) ex pectations are very hiijh . . . but . . . sometimes expectations blow up in one's face. (Still) I feel It Is better to aim for the tars than to Just shoot over the hen house." Bill Bowcrman, ex-Medford high track and football coach, and now head track mentor and freshmen gridiron tutor at the University of Oregon, wrote those words recently in a letter to Sports Editor Hank Green of the Medlord Mail xriDune. rMM Wnrlr at Euaene "Athletically, I have enjoyed my work here (university) very much," Bowerman said in part. "(But) It Is going to be mighty fine to have an opportunity to breathe some of the warm, dry imtn air nf th Roaue River val ley." Last season he had good mater ial and won four plus a defeat from Washington Frosh. "In track we have enjoyed a lotof success. We had an excellent freshman team last year headed by Jack Hutchlns who ran the fastest mile in the United States, and Chuck Missfeldt who had the best freshman distance in the Javelin In the United States USC Offers Dual Meat ' "Southern California, the per ennial national champions, paid us the compliment of wanting to meet us (Oregon varsity) in a dual track meet. We were will ing but could not match dates with USC . . . Their depth would have given (hem a victory but we certainly would have shown some interesting competi tion before the afternoon was over. "We have Earl Stelle (cx-Mcd. ford high standout on track and in football) who is good enough to place well up in any Uoast conference competition . . ." Herb Nill Mentioned "In the discus we have Herb Nill (another ex-Tornado track standout) who still holds the Hay- ward relay discus record, Bow erman said. The former Medford coach also mentioned several other outstanding varsity track pros pects at the university, including George Rasmusscn, second best vaulter in world; Dave Earl, an OSC transfer; Hutchins in the mile and Art Backlund, Rose- burg high standout, in the two mile. Jan. 18 Grants Pass Junior high eighth and ninth grade teams will play similar quintets from Central Point Junior high Thursday starting at 3 p.m on the Central Point floor. The eighth graders vie at 3 p.m. with the ninth grade contest scheduled at 4 p.m. the pointers eighth graders to date are undefeated in con ference play with victories over MPctrorct arm Asnianct. (U.R) The University of Oregon fresh men won a 71-53 basketball independent team representing game here last night against the the Oregon Lumber sales in a game staged as a test of the new two-minute rule. The test game called for a 15-fouls-pcr-team limit with the op posing team getting a bonus shot for every foul over 15 commit ted. The frosh committed 14 fouls but the Lumber Sales squad fouled 21 times to give Oregon six bonus shots in addition to the regular free throws. Devised By Burnett The foul limitation rule was devised by Bob Burnett, assist ant basketball coach at Stanford university. Stanford freshmen and jayvees are playing some 40 games this year under the new rule to give it a thorough tcrt. In the new rule, no player is benched when he makes his fifth foul. The rule has its strongest ef fect near the end of the game in that the losing team would not de liberately foul an opposing play er for fear of having two points, instead of one, scored against his team. . Snead, Hogan Slate Match Los Angeles, Jan. 18. (U.R) Ben Hogan and Sammy Snead, a pair of drawling drivers, met today in their delayed playoff for the Los Angeles Open Golf championship the climax to Hogun's stirring comeback from the verge of death. The playoff over the long, tough Riviera Country club lay out may emerge as one of golfs classic matches as the two vet eran pros, both among the all time greats, go after $2,600 first place money. Loser in the 18-holes of medal play picks up $1,900 and each will share equally in 50 per cent of the gate from an expect ed crowd of 10,000. The playoff goes into a "sud den death" extension if Hogan and Snead are tied after 18 holes. That means the first to win a hole would win the match. Slammin' Snmmy, the Sulphur Springs, W. Va., long driver, was sure he at last had mastered the Riviera course and could handle "the little fellow." Minneapolis Pro Cagers Victors By United Pratt Thn Minneapolis Lakers left the Boston Celtics with the Job of sweeping up the pieces today after brutally shattering the Hub quintet in a National Basketball association contest. Paced by chief gunner George Miknn, who plopped in 22 points, the Lakers hit with the oxplosiveness of a 105 howitzer Inst night as the drubbed the Celtics, 105 to 79. Jim Pollard, also of Minneapolis, romped home for second scoring honors with 21 points. The victory moved the Lakers tn within two percentage points of the first place Rochester Roy als in the central division race. Indianapolis took a one game lead over Idle Anderson In the western division by cracKing hapless Denver Nuggets 101 to 81 in the evening's only other contest. Roguti Take Laad Rogue River led last night at the first quarter 11 to 8, 23 to 17 at the half and 38 to 27 at the third period. The Chieftains were behind only for a minute or two and that in the opening minutes of the first quarter of play. Coach Melvin Webb of Rogue River said today that the Frosh five could not match the Chief tains in either speed or height. Tonight Oak Grove seventh and eighth grade basketball teams travel to Central Point's gymnasium to night for games and plans are being completed at the Oak Grove school for a chili feed to be held at the school Wednes day evening. January 25, in con nection with three games. The Grovers were scheduled to play Jacksonville s grade school ers last Friday but the bad weather postponed the tilts to date to be announced later. Close Games Foreseen Oak Grove quintets are now ranked two of the top basketball teams in the county's non-high school district and figure to give tne pointers a tough battle to night. Next week Wednesday a chili feed, will be held at 5:30 p.m with three basketball games fol lowing at 6:30 at the Oak Grove school. The Grove sixth grade quintet will meet West Side at 6:30, followed by Griffin Creek teams facing the Grovers sev enth and eighth graders. Tickets for the feed and games are now on sale at the school, Principal Bruce Metzger an nounced. Pro Football Leagues Meet To Join Forces Philadelphia, Jan. 18 (U.R) More money and less leering was the aim of professional football's club owners as thev gathered today to form the new National- American league. The 10-tcam National Football league and three remnants from the wreck of the All-America conference were the basis for the new association. Two cities, Buffalo, N. Y., and Houston, Tex., also applied for franchises and required unani mous approval of the 13 charter members to get them. Butte Falls AAU Five Downs Medco 53 To 36 Butte Falls, Jan. 18. Butte Falls, winner of the Crazy- Swayze quintet in the AAU Bas ketball league Monday night, will travel to Phoenix for its AAU tilt tonight in the Phoenix gym. Butte Falls dumped the Swayze outfit 53 to 36 for the Medford team's second loss. Darrell Stephenson- with 22 points led the Butte Falls quin tet while Apitz tallied 10 to pace the Swayze five. Butte Falls led at the half 24 to 23 and 38 to 30 at the third quarter. Wildlife Federation Meeting Date Changed Corvallis, Jan. 18 (U.R) The annual Oregon Wildlife .federa tion meeting here, scheduled to open its three-day meeting to morrow, has been indefinitely postponed, said President Bruce Yeager. Dangerous road conditions were given as the reason for the postponement. The Webtoots meet Washing ton Friday and Saturday night and then the two teams meet again a week later, January 27 and 2B, at McArthur court, Eugene. The Huskies, dead last In the Northern Division chase last sea son, have done a brilliant about face and are the surprise lead ers in the early part of the 1950 campaign for the league cham pionship. Washington split a pair of games with Washington State last weekend at Pullman, always a tough thing to accomplish, and will be favored to win over the Webfoots, loser of a single game with Oregon State last Friday. Washington will be favored to retain its Northern Division lead as the two top contenders, Wash ington State and Oregon State, meet in Pullman to conclude their 1950 four game series. Stan Smith Gets Handicap Trophy Stan Smith gained permanent possession of the pistol handicap trophy last night by taking the third and last leg on the award when the pistol division of the Medford Rifle club held its week ly shoot at the indoor range in Merrick's A new contest among .mem bers for a second handicap trophy also donated by the club, will start next week, Tuesday. Max Terzenbach led the regu lar pistol shoot which attracted 22 persons to the competition, as he . shot a 276. Following him were Frank Rush with 250, Paul Stage 248, Bill Bray 245 and Roy Hewitt 245. Junior High Hoopsters Win, Lose At Ashland Medford junior high basket ball team made it two victories over Ashland junior high quin tets against one defeat by the Lithia city boys when the local varsity tipped Ashland's ninth graders 51 to 34 after the Lithia city eighth graders downed Med ford's boys 39 to 21 at Ashland last night. Last week the local seventh grade quintet had downed Ash land's seventh graders. Varsity Undefeated While the local varsity con tinued its undefeated record its up-to-now almost impregnable defense suffered a severe jolt as one Ashland boy Tenny tip ped tn 14 points for the most any one opposing player has scored against the local varsity in many a game. Coach Mel Boldenow said that "something will have to be done" about that Tenny boy the next time Medford plays Ashland. The same youth also played in the eighth grade contest and walked off with 14 points in that also. I lie local varsity s defense up to last evening had been holding opponents to but 25 points or less in a game. Nothing seemed to go right for Medford last night in guarding opponents so chances are Boldenow will be putting his varsity boys through tough workouts. NCAA 'Sanity Code' Battle to Continue CHICAGO, Jan. 18 (U.R) The NCAA lowered a boycott boom on its "sinful seven rebels today touching off a new sanity code battle' which might split the organization. only a ween ago viie"""' Boston College, Villanova, Vir ginia Military, Virginia Tech, Maryland and the Citidel won a fight over the sanity code forces when they blocked expulsion ai the NCAA convention. No Tourney Play But despite this victory NCAA President Hugh C. Wiilett and Secretary-Treasurer Kenneth L. Wilson announced last nicht that the offending schools cannot play in any NCAA tournaments ihis year or enter into any future ath letic contracts with other NCAA members. "Neither the president nor tne secreiary treasurer has authority to act Grade Schoolers To Play Thursday Lincoln will be playing at Roosevelt and Washington goes to the Jackson school for local grade school varsity basketball games Thursday at 4:15 p.m. Lincoln and Roosevelt won open ing games last week so two win ners and a pair of losers will be playing tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon Washing ton came out as the only unde feated school in the junior var sity basketball conference among local schools by downing Jack son 26 to 11 at Jackson school. The same afternoon Roosevelt school edged last year's city grade school champions, Lincoln, 15 to 11 in an overtime period. The regulation game ended in a 11 to 11 tieup. 14 to 8 at the first quarter, 23 to 20 at the half, 34 to 27 at the third period and 43 to 32 at the automatic time out.
