Exceptions to the general trout season opening day Indued East, Paulina and Diamond lakes in central Oregon where the season will open June 1 ana close oep- tember 15. The McKenzie river and middle fork of the Willam ette will be open from May 1 to October 15. Baa limits and minimum inih ffpnernllv remained un changed at 10 fish per day or 20 fish in possession, all more than Inrhpa in lcnclh. However, minimum lengths in East, Paulina, Sparks and Davis lakes and Crane Prairie and Wickiup reservoirs were raised to nine inches. A 10-inch length limit which has governed size of trout catches in Diamond lake was lowered to six inches. Wintar Fishing Dated The winter fishing season for salmon and stceinead more tnan 20 inches in length will extend from October 10 through Febru ary 28, except in the Nestucca river where fishing will remain open until March 13, Salmon bag limit will remain two a day, or four in possession, except that the weekly bag limit on the Rogue river will be raised from four to five fish. A 20-fish season limit rule was retained, The commission also decided to issue salmon tags this year. All fishermen will be required to record catches. The tags will be Issued to anglers without charge. Special Saaion Sat ' A special season from October 10 to February 28 was approved for the Clackamas river below River Mill dam for trout 10 inches and more In length. This is in addition to the general trout season on the river. During the special season, however, the bag limit will be two fish a day. A bag limit of five fish on striped bass and a minimum length of 30 inches on sturgeon , also were included in the tenta tive regulations. The sturgeon regulation also provides for a 72 inch maximum length. Junior Rifle Shooters Meet at Medford Range Medford Junior Rifle club held a meeting last night with 11 at tending. The advanced class shot from the sitting position, with Mickey Loros first, having 84 prone and 85 sitting and a total of 189 out of a possible 200. Second through fifth were Wayne Clymer, 168, 89 prone, 77 sitting: Dick Loros, 163 with 88 prone, 77 sitting; Richard Lei brand, 158 with 83 prone, 75 sit ting; Jay Dow, 157 with 85 prone, 72 sitting. There will be a meeting next Monday night, January 23. All boys and girls up to 18 years of age are welcome to come to the meetings, officers said. Junior High Vies Tonight Medford junior high eighth graders and the varsity basket bailers go to Ashland tonight for a conference scries with the young Grizzlies on the junior nign noor. The local varsity or ninth grade quintet will be out after its seventh or eight victory of the 1940-50 season against no defeats when it takes on the Ash land ninth graders about 8:15. The eighth grade teams are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Last week Thursday the local varsity walloped Central Point ninth grade team while the same evening the Medford eighth grad er five was edged by the Point ers. The same day ot Ashland tile local seventh graders of Medford topped the Ashlandcrs. In view of the records of both local quintets Medford will be favored to win both games to night. So far in conference games Prospect has won one and lost one while the Crusaders have lost two. Prospect edged Talent 48 to 41 in the opener of the season back in December but early this month it dropped a 48 to 27 de cision to Jacksonville. In the meantime St. Mary's.lost its first conference tilt to Butte Falls 68 to 32 and then dropped one to Hogue River 43 to to. Indications are that with a rap id y improving Crusaders quintet on the floor toniiiht a close game will be played. By comparative scores this also noias true. oi. Mary's. Rogue River and Jack sonville have played the same opponents to give a comparative score. Other games postponed from last Friday night nave not been announced as a proposed princi pals meeting last night was post poned. Mel Carpenter Declines Offer Mel Carpenter, business man ager of the Medford Nuggets, said todav that he had declined an offer of a similar position at Stockton in the California State league. Carpenter said that although the Stockton offer would be a step up in organized baseball, he preferred to remain in Medford "where I have been a party to starting the ball rolling and would like to see it through." The business manager came to Medford last spring from Klamath Falls where he had a similar position with the Klam ath Gems, also of the Far West league. During the baseball season Carpenter is employed full time by Rogue Valley Baseball, Inc., operators of the Medford Nug gets, and in the off season he works for the club on a part time basis, devoting the rest of his time to a part-time job at Rogue Valley Land, company. Robinson And Costner Bout Slated In March Philadelphia, Jan. 17 (U.R) welterweight Champion Hay Robinson today planned a Flor ida vacation in order to rest up for his re-scheduled non - title bout with George (Sugar) Cost ner at Convention hall March 22. The fight, originally scheduled for February - 22, was moved ahead a month when Robinson failed to pass a physical exami nation held under the supervi sion of the Pennsylvania State athletic commission yesterday. BOWLING MAJOR LEAGUE A doublcheader was rolled in the Major Bowling lanes with Chalkers "chalking" up high team series for the evening with a 2,790 pinfall last night which is also the highest of the year rolled to date. Highest team game of the night also was rolled in this ser ies with a 1,069 pinfall. In this game Jerry Burroughs, anchor man for the quintet, turned in a soaring 275 to take the lead in individual games. He also won high Individual series for the evening with 647 pnfall. Pep Winner By Knockout Over Riley St. Louis, Jan. 17 (U.R) Some day, somehow Feather weight Champion Willie Pep will reach the end of the line but at the moment that sunset seems far away for the Hart ford Hurricane. He defended his title with al most ludicrous ease last night when he belted Challenger Char ley Riley into rigid unconscious ness in the fifth round of their scheduled 19-round bout. Riley was touted as a slugger who might fire a kayo punch for an upset victory but against Pep he was woefully inept. Pep Timing Topi Riley's gamenoss and Pep's mastery of timing was the chal lenger's undoing. Riley, trying to land a knockout punch, bun gled into Pep's smashing one two that stretched him out on the canvas after one minute and one second of the fifth round. It was the 46th knockout by Pep in his professional career. Pep's left drove back Riley's guard at the fatal moment and Pep's smashing right connected with the challenger's jaw. Riley, stunned, turned slowly about and slumped forward. He was out a full minute. Denver Nuggets Losers Of 31st In Basketball In National Cage Loop By United Press The Denver Nuggets, burned with the worst record In the National Basketball association, apparently have reached a new low in futility. Although three of their play ers hit or passed the 20-point mark in scoring, the Nuggets went down to their 31st loss in 37 games last night at the hands of the Anderson Packers, 95-83. In a doubleheader at Chicago, the P h il a d e 1 p h i a Warriors whipped the Sheboygan Reds kins, 89 to 72, and the Chicago Stags downed the St. Louis Bombers, 78 to 69. Hockey Seattle, Jan. 17 (U.R) Larry Silvestri of San Francisco and Alan Kuntz of Vancouver have led the scoring in their respec tive divisions of the Pacific Coast Hockey league almost all season and they still do. Statistics show that Kuntz boasts a two-point edge over Doug Adam of Tacoma. Silves tri had a bulee of eight points over Maurice Vaillancourt of San Diego. Silvestri topped the southern division with 54 points and led in assists witn a. vauiancourt, Jim Fairburn of San Francisco and Walt Samanski of San Fran cisco each had 25 goals. AAU Basketball Dated En Area On Wednesday Two AAU Basketball league games will be played at the local junior high gym Wednesday eve ning and another pair are sched uled there Thursday, President Hugh Williams said today as he announced opening of the second half of the 1940-50 slate and close of first half. Tomorrow it will be Crazy Swayze taking on Modoc at 7 p.m. in the Junior high, follow ed about 8:15 when Prospect's town team plays Groceteria. The opener will close the first half of the year while the Prospect Groceteria go will open the sec ond half of the season. Out Of Town Games Out of town AAU league games Wednesday will find Jacksonville's town team play ing at the Rogue River high gym and Butte Falls going to Phoe nix to open the second half. Ford Mullen May Get Eugene Baseball Post Eugene, Ore., Jan. 17 (U.R) Veteran Infielder Ford Mullen, a pre-war second baseman with the Philadelphia Phillies, an nounced today he has been given on unconditional release by the Portland Beavers and is a can didate for player-manager of the Eugene club of the Far West league. Mullen, a baseball and basket ball letterman when he attended the University of Oregon, at one time coached both sports at Eu gene high school.
