As the fat naroens. me anei- Science Observes Cause For Worry In Near Future Pasadena, Cal, Jan. 14 U.R) Dr. Lee A. Dubridge, president of the California Institute of Technology, today reviewed the institutions 1840 achievements and observed there is "consider able cause for worry" that sci ence faces strangulation and sup pressed ireedom. "Wartime success of Ameri can scientists in developing new military weapons has apparently left a widespread illusion that the chief function of science is to evolve weapons of war," he said. Basic Science To Lose He said this has given the pub lic the idea that the federal gov ernment is amply paying for sci entific research, but that actu ally the government scientific functions are basically mili tary the military establishment and the atomic energy commis sion. The result, he declared, gives rise to two dangers: 1. Basic science will lose out when competing for funds with military projects. 2. Basic science will fall vic tim to secrecy restrictions which "necessarily pervade military weapon development programs. "An excellent way to stifle science is to cut off its source of support," Dubridge warned. "A still better way is to supress its freedom by the imposition of unnecessary secrecy regulations. Miont 2 6211 South Riveriid Rossellini Divorce Grounds Corrected Rome, Jan. 14 (U.R) Film Director Roberto Rossellini ob tained an Austrian divorce on grounds that he was "incapable of will and understanding" at the time of his marriage in 1936, the Turin court of appeals was told yesterday. The United Press erroneously reported that the court was told the divorce was obtained on grounds Rossellini was under the influence of drugs during tne marriage ceremony, The question of drugs did not come up in the Turin court pro ceedings and attorneys for both Rossellini and his former wife, Marcella, denied the report. The drug report was published by the newspaper Gazzcta Del Populo of Turin. The United Press dispatch was erroneous in making it appear that the ques tion came up in court. She was estimated to weigh 19 ounces. The infant, Kathryn Elizabeth Hlncklev. was born Thursday night. She is the third child of A. W. and Frances Hinckley, l.o mita, Cal. Dr. Kurt T. Sherv. the attend ing physician, estimated she was no longer than 11 incnes and said her head would fit into an ordinary water glass. "But the baby is definitely holding her own," Dr. Shery said. "We won't feed her for 48 hours, and if she lives that long her chances will be reasonably good." Mite-sized Kathryn was born two and a half months prema turely, but her mother's condi tion was reported gooo. asked If they plan to have a baby. "Of course." he said. "Every body like children." Less than a thousand fans were on hand at pier 32 when the Lurline docked at 9 a. m., in contrast to the near-riot crowd that saw the Gables off two weeks ago. Philharmonic Group To Perform Today Musicians from all parts of southern Oregon will be playing this afternoon when the orches tra of the Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon appears in concert at the high school audi torium. The al I- orchestral program will feature symphonic composi tions, including one by the di rector which will be presented for the first time, and Miss Mel ba Chehak, Medford.and Harla lee Wilson of Ashland will play the Bach "Concerto for Two Violins." The concert is set for 3 p.m. and tickets may be obtained at the door. Following the concert mem bers of the orchestra and guests will hold a social hour in the cafeteria of the high school. Lodi Phone Manager, Wife Die In Car Wreck Visalia, Cal., Jan. 14 (U.R) George Adam Burrell, 61, man ager of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company at Lodi, and his wife, Bculah. were in stantly killed today when their automobile collided with a gaso line tanker truck near L,indsey. California Highway Patrolman R. R. Roese said the elderly couple were thrown from their car by the impact and their bodies run over by another truck on the highway. Eureka Jolted By Sharp Earthquake Eureka, Cal., Jan. 14 (U.R) A short, sharp earthquake jolted this city today at 11:50 a.m. (PST). It caused no damage but was severe enough to make chande liers sway and was widely felt by townspeople. The temblor was characterized by a rocking side-to-side motion. It was the second earth shock registered here within the past two days. A light temblor was felt at 4:15 a.m. January 13. (Berkeley, the University of California reported its seismo graphs recorded the Eureka shock. (The university was unable to say immediately where quake centered or how severe it was). Ambulance Racing To Accident Call Involved In Crash Salem, Ore., Jan. 14 (U.R) A Salem ambulance responded to an accident call last night and ran into one itself. The ambulance and a car driven by Mildred J. Becker of Salem collided at Fairgrounds road and North Capitol street, police reported today. The rear fender of the ambulance was smashed. No one was hurt. Then the ambulance con tinued to the location to which it had been called and found I the accident report was a false I alarm. 1 FOUND UNLUCKY IS Grand Island, Neb. (U.R) Thir teen Grand Island men were ar rested when their gambling hang out was raided. The raid was a comnlete surprise to them de spite an elaborate warning de vice, a barred door, buzzer and a peep hole, all in operation.
