"There'll be changes made" In lhr district 4 class A high school basketball team standings Friday and Saturday evenings this week as bagie rami, n.imii ath, Central Point, Medford, Kerby, Ashland and Grants Pass meet each other. Friday Medford's Black Tor nado takes on Central Point on the local senior high floor while Eagle Point plays at Klamath Falls and Grants Pass plays at Kerby. All games will be at 8 p.m. The following evening It will be Granls Pass playing Medford at Medford, Kerby will go to Central Point, Ashland has a date with Klamath Falls at Klamath and Central Point plays at Kerby. Prelim Both Nights Preliminary game Friday night at Medford will put the Medford Tiger Cubs against the Central Point jayvces at 6:30 and on Saturday the local jayvees will play Grants Pass junior varsity at 7 p.m. after the respective sophomore teams start it off at 6 p.m. ., . The varsity game here both nights will begin about 8 p.m. Should the Tornado get by the Pointers here tomorrow night it will take over first place alone for at least 24 hours as the Cave men who now are tied with Med ford for first place in district 4 are idle Friday evening. The Tornado may take it for good If it wins Saturday night. Pre-season forecasts that Med ford and Giants Pass might be the only ones really battling for district honors were given u sharp jolt last Saturday night when the Cavemen barely edged Klamath 43 to 41 and Medford slid by Ashland 37 to 31 with no easy game being played. Ashland Topi Pointers Friday games last week saw Ashland smother Central Point 57 to 38 and Klamath wallop Illinois Valley (Kerby) 81 to 11. Prognostlcators now figure it Is at least a three team race Medford, Klamath and Grants Pass and probably a four-way clash when you include Ashland hieh. Eagle Point will be playing lis first district game Saturday when it visits Klamath Falls as a scheduled tiff with Kerby at Eagle Point last Saturday was postponed Decause snow condi tions prevented the Kerby (Illi nois Valley) school team from making the trip. Friday Game Tough No easy game for the Tornado is expected Friday evening when Central Point appears here, par ticularly as the two schools have been rivals for some time. Klamath probably will have Utile trouble against the Eagles although Eagle Point is unde feated in J-D-J league competi ' tion. Central Point is favored over Kerby and Klamath over Ashland. Rassling Due Here Jan. 19 Promoter Mack Lillard re turned yesterday from a scout ing trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles with the announce ment that weekly wrestling cards will resume at the armory on Thursday, January 19. The promoter said several new comers to the southern Oregon grappling wars have been signed for appearances in the near lu ture, including Leo Wallick, Cowboy Billy Hines, Tom Bell and Lee Grable. Davidson Aiki Match Lillard said that when he re turned he found a letter from Buck Davidson offering to wrestle Jack Lipscomb for noth ing to settle our argument. "If Davidson is that willing to get the match, I'll promote it for nothing and give Lipscomb my hare as well as Davidsons, Lillard said. "I don't see how Lipscomb can afford lo pass up that kind of an offer." He said he expected to have a card completed and ready for announcement by Sunday. 19 Gridders Died In 1949 Los Angeles, Jan. 12. !U.R) Nineteen non-college players died of football injuries in 1040 and seven were killed indirectly by gridiron play, the American Football Coaches association said today Colleges completed their sec ond year In a row without a death resulting directly from play, Dr. Floyd R. Eastwood, chairman of the association's in jury and fatality committee, re ported. Eastwood, dean of men at Los Angeles Stale college, said his report will be presented today to the association in New York. Nine of the direct football deaths were in high school play, seven in sandlot games and three In athletic club competition, he said. Beavers Are Favorites Coupled with the fact that Oregon State has not lost both games of a two-game home con ference series since 1944, the Beavers have been installed as slight favorites to take the con test. Ways of stopping Paul Sowers, high-scoring Webfoot guard, and Will Urban, all-around forward, are the two most pressing prob lems facing Gill. Sowers potted 31 points in the Cougar series despite the checking of giant Cougar Guard Gayda. The tentative State starting lineup was Bob Payne and Jim Padgett at forward posts; Lcn Rinearson at center with Dick Ballantyne and Bill Harper as guards. Junior High, C.P. Tonight Central Point, Jan. 12 Cen tral Point junior high basket ballcrs will be host to eighth and ninth (varsity) quintets from Medford on the C. P. high school floor today starting at 7 p.m. First game at 7 p.m. will put the respective eighth grade teams against each other with the varsity from Medford meet ing the Central Point ninth grade five about 8:15 p.m. Medford's ninth grade boys will be out to keep their two year undefeated record intact while the eighth graders from the Pear City will be seeking another in a long string of wins. This afternoon the Medford seventh grade team was schedul ed to play the Ashland junioi high seventh graders at Ashland. Red Heads Edge Local AAU Cagers, 24 to 23 Olson's famous Red Heads girls' basketball team, tired from a long trip over snow and ice packed roads on the way to Medford from the south plus a game every night for some time, barely edged the Crazy-Swayze quintet of the Medford AAU league last night 24 to 23. The game played at the senior high gym and sponsored by the Medford 20-30 club drew a huge crowd. The local team led at the half whistle 15 to 7. Class B Cage Tilts Friday Valley Gyms Third round in the county class B high school basketball schedule comes Friday night with the two presently only un defeated teams Butte Falls and Rogue River vying with Talent and Phoenix respectively. Phoe nix will be host for its game and Butte Falls for its tilt. Chances are that late tomor row evening the Loggers and the Chieftains still will be undefeat ed quintets. Other county class B games tomorrow night win send Pros pect to St. Mary's (Medford) and Gold Hill to Jacksonville. The Redskins have one victory and one loss while Gold Hill has lost two games. St. Mary's likewise has lost two while Prospect has divided its to games. Last week Fridav niffht Butte f Falls won its second 1949-50 game by downing Phoenix 46 to 1 34. Rogue River retained its un defeated status by rolling over St. Mary's 43 to 26, Jacksonville took over Prospect 48 to 27 and Talent rapped Gold Hill 55 to 42. Oak Grove Cagers Play Home Floor On Friday Oak Grove school seventh and eighth grade basketball teams will play similar teams from the Jacksonville grade school Fri day starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Oak Grove floor. The eigl i graders' contest is billed for 6:45 with the ninth grade quintet playing about 815. Yesterday's scheduled games with teams from Applegate school were postponed to a date to be announced later when snow prevented Applegate from making the trip, Principal Bruce Metzger of Oak Grove said here. Eugene Baseball Club Signed With Red Sox Eugene. Ore., Jan. 12 0J.R) Business Manager Walter Nellis said today that the Eugene base ball club of the Far West league has signed a working agreement with the Boston Red Sox of the American league. Last night the fifth place Leafs payed their Ranger cousins another visit and skated home with a 2 to. 1 triumph, their fourth in seven games, with the Blueshirts. New York has won only one victory over the Leafs this year and two ties. The Boston Bruins won their second straight victory of the season from the front-running Detroit Red Wings in another 2 to 1 squeaker. Jan. 12. !U.R -As Chairman Eddie Eagan of the New York commission relented unexpectedly today on Middle weight Champion Jake Lamotta, Commissioner John (Ox) Da Grosa of Pennsylvania cracked the whip at Welterweight Boss Ray Robinson. Eagan did an about-face when informed that Lamotta of the Bronx had signed to meet Light Heavyweigt Dick Wagner at De troit on February 3 in the first of a series of tune-up bouts be fore defending his 160-pound crown in June, probably at De troit. Two weeks ago Eagan and his commission threatened to vacate Lamotta's title unless he signed before February 1 for a defense in March. Today, however, Eagan said the commission prob ably would give Lamotta favor able consideration if he signed before February 1 for a defense in June. Meanwhile, at Philadelphia Commissioner Da Grosa announc ed that the Pennsylvania com mission would suspend Robin son, the 147-pound champ, if he tried to pull out of a scheduled non-title bout with George (Sugar) Costner at Philadelphia on February 22. Jack sonville had been ahead most of the way and up until the final three minutes. The J'ville quintet led at the half whistle 19 to 14. Top scorers for Medco which now has won five games and lost none, were Ernest Christensen and Kenneui Beebe each with 10 points. High point-makers for Jacksonville were McBeth and Forbes each of whom scored eight. Joe Gordon Gets Indians Contract Cleveland, O., Jan. 12 (U.R) Second Baseman Joe Gordon said today he had received his 1950 contract from the Cleve land Indians but added "I'm afraid I don't like it." Gordon, whose hitting fell off last year despite his 20 home runs, said "the contract they mailed me cut my base pay S5, 000 and eliminated a bonus of S2.500. It makes me wonder if they really want me. Doesn't seem consistent."
