Shirley Temple Denies
Report Of Romance
Hollywood, Jan. 12 (U.R)
Shirley Temple denied today
that she is having "secret love
trysts" with a wealthy Reno ho
tel magnate.
Those stories linking her with
young Charles Mapes Jr., owner
of the multi-million-dollar Mapes
hotel, are just plain ridiculous,
she said.
"It makes me furious," Shirley
said. "How can people pull these
things out of the sky like that?
Whatever gave them that idea? I
suppose, now that I'm divorced,
these rumors will come up all the
time.
"What are they doing to me?
Do you suppose every time I go
to dinner or dancing with a
young man they'll have us en
gaged?" Shirley, who gave Actor John
ny Agar the legal heave-ho a
month ago on charges that he
drank too much and kissed other
women snys she has never dated
young Mapes in her life.
Mapes also denied the story.
"There's nothing to it." he said
In Reno. "We're Just good
friends."
Insurance Partnership
Formation Announced
W. E. Thomas1, Oregon Finance
company, 45 South Central av

solution of the W. E. Thomas In

with the company. In its place
will be the Stark-Thomas Insur
ance agency, a partnership, with
W. E. Thomas and Stan Stark,

grumbled. "I am a fair mechanic
myself. But things went wrong
with that &' S& station wagon
that needed gadgets I never even
heard of.
Trio Took Two Weeks
H took him two solid weeks
to chug from Pennsylvania to
Hollywood, biezak ligurcs ne
covered that 3000 miles twice.
On foot from garage to garage
and the rest of the way by
jalopy. . . at a torturous 35 miles
an hour.
Now that jalopy is the family
limousine. If the Slczaks have
to get any place in a hurry, papa
can always fly 'em there in his
private plane.
"I hadn't planned to drive the
station wagon home, mind you,'
farmer Slezak explained. "I had
a brand new Buick. But when
we rented the farm, I shippeu
my wife, my three kids, their
nurse, and their luggage homt
on the train,
'I was to drive the Buick with
myself, which is a 300-pounu
baggage right there, the dog, anu
the rest of our household goods.
Forgetlulness Costly
Came the day of departure and
Slezak laboriously packed tht
stuff into the Buick. Then he
started the motor. It wasn't until
then he remembered he d for
gotten to drain the radiator the
night before. And it was a colu
night. The block cracked.
"They say in the village it will
take two weeks to get it fixed,
Slezak sighed. "I tell 'em to fi;
it and sell it. Then I unloa.
everything out of the Buick an
re-load it all into the statio.
wagon.
"Believe me, we are packec
In full. There wasn't an un
broken spring left when I limpet
into my driveway here. We bare
ly cleared the little bumps oi:
the highways. The big bumps wc
scraped every time."
Slezak has no envy in his heart
when a high-powered Cadillac
roars past him nowadays. His
own motor might not have the
same soup but it sure cost a:
much!
