Specific Safeguards For Law to Legalize Mercy Killings Urged By Medic Bar Harbor, Me., Jan. 12 (U.R) Dr. Clarence Cook Little, cele brated cancer aumority, today suggested specific safeguards for a law legalizing mercy killings. Dr. Little, director of the widely-known Roscoe B. Jackson Me morial laboratory here, told the United tress mat lor the incur ably ill but mentally fit his safety factors would be: 1. Consent of the patient, 2. Consent of his next of kin. 3. Approval of a board of three medical judges set up by a state medical association. The patient s doctor would present the case, but would not be a board member. Will Idea Endorsed For mental defectives, the 61- year-old former president of the Universities of Michigan and Maine said procedure should be the same except for the patient's consent provision Dr. Little endorsed the idea of allowing a person to make a will, to be opened u and when he is stricken with an incurable disease. This document would prescribe whether he wished to be killed painlessly. "This will similar to those concerning cremation w o u 1 d express the reasoned desire of a healthy person, made while in full possession of his senses and uninfluenced by pain." he said. "All human beings have the right to be born,- to live and to die as they wish," added Dr. Little, who has been active in the field of cancer research since 1907. "Those opposed to euthanasia need not avail themselves of it but why prevent others?" Proponents Agree He said euthanasia proponents agree that the patient should be kept alive until the process of dying has started. President of the American Eu thanasia Society from 1938 to 1943, Dr. Little also has headed both the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Commenting on the case of Dr. Hermann N. Sander, who faces a murder trial at Man chester, N. H., for the mercy killing of a woman cancer pa. tient. Dr. Little said: "There's no doubt Dr. Sander exceeded the speed limit, but I believe what he did was right, human and Christian. I'm sure his conscience is clearer now than if he allowed her suffering to continue. We are helped into life nowadays, so why not be helped out? Death Only Transition "When you kill the human body you don't kill the soul, so we should be able to do what we like with the body. We mere ly are freezing a part of a man which isn't of the body and it's the body part that is crippling the soul. "If you don't believe in the soul, then there's great reason to hang onto is all you have. Dr. Little said, "But if you believe in immortal ity, then death is only a trans ition. - "Why not make life as happy at the end as the welfare state attempts to make it in the middle?" Farm Loan Groups Annual Meetings Slated Jan. 19 Two agencies of the Farm Credit administration, the Na tional Farm Loan association and the Production Credit association will hold their annual meetings jointly this year at the Central Point Grange on January 19, beginning at 11 a. m. and ending at 3:30 p. m., it was announced today. As both institutions are co operatives and are owned and controlled by the membership, it is important that all members attend to learn of the progress of their associations during the past year and to elect some new directors in each association, a spokesman pointed out. To Serve Dinner Immediately after registration, a complimentary dinner will be served to all members, their families and guests. In the after noon, the financial progress of the association will be reported by the two secretaries, Arthur M. Boner of the Production cred it association and Earl Lintz of the National Farm Loan associa tion. A panel discussion regarding nolicies of the association will be held. Short talks will be given by Jackson County Agent Ben Tucker, H. L. DeLaney of the Federal Lank bank and Otto Allgaier of the Production Credit corporation, both from the Spo kane offices. After the election of new directors the meeting will adjourn. Copco Reports Gross Operating Revenues San Francisco, Jan. 12. Cali fornia Oregon Power company has reported gross operating revenues of S9,826,301 for the twelve months ended Dec. 31, 1949, an increase of $872,134 or 9.74 per cent over $8,954,187 for preceding 12 months. Sales of electricity to residen tial customers during twelve months ended Dec. 31, 1949, in creased 22.58 per cent over those of the previous year and averag ed 4. 831.29 kilowatt hours a customer. The number of books and articles written on the subject of "How To Get a Man" runs into thousands. Incidentally, Mr. Shaw, a vegetarian, continues to be one of the world's liveliest old boys. At 93 he still packs considerable vim, vigor and what-not. The vegetarians never grow weary of referring to Mr. Shaw's continu ed good health. Still, G. B. S. is not the liveliest old boy in the world. I believe that title may rightly be bestowed on another Englishman, Alfred Crundwell, of Tunbridge Wells. Mr, Crund well, who is 99, goes dancing every night. And not waltzing either.
