A lecture on psychology con vinces Dora Foster she and her husband have reared their two children, Judy and Randolph, all wrong but disagrees in "Father Takes an Interest", laugh-packed "A Date With Judy" broadcast to be heard over Station KYJC and the ABC network tonight at 7:30. L. writes: "For a num ber of years I have had a tickle in my throat, a cough, and a post - nasal drip, which I assume is due to catarrh. Most doctors just call it a tickle and give me medicine which I never take." Catarrh means d i f fer ent things to different peo ple. Webjter savs "Catarrh: Dr. Bradv a discharge of mucous from the membranes of the nose, fauces, and bronchi, characteristic of the ailment called a cold In the head." My lexicon states, "Catarrh: inflam mation of mucous membrane, with a free discharge, especially such inflammation of the air pas sages of the head and throat." Everyone has experienced this so-called "catarrh" with a case of C-R-I (Ihe "common cold," or Common Respiratory Infection). But for symptoms such as those which the lady above describes, "catarrh" is no explanation at all. True, the discharge she no tices does arise from the mucous membranes of the air passages in the head. But chances are that it is more of a muco-puru-lent discharge (meaning one con sisting of mucous and pus). The air passages of which I am speak ing are the nasal sinuses. Inflam mation of these sinuses is very common, and its causes are nu merous. Chronic inflammation of the sinuses, palled chronic sinusitis, is accompanied by a more or less Business Loans Drop $53 Million At Turn Of Year Washington, Jan. 11 (U.R) Business loans declined $53,000, 000 at the turn of the year to S13,851,000.000 on January 4, the Federal Reserve board re ported today. The latest total was $1,523,000,000 below the level of the corresponding date in 1949. This decline reflected the cus tomary seasonal dip in stockpil ing of inventories. The regular condition state ment of weekly reporting mem ber banks of the Federal Re serve system also showed a drop in total loans and investments of $199,000,000 in the latest week of $62,222,000,000. a level 84,584,000,000 higher than on the corresponding 1949 date. Bank Loans Dip Loans by the banks to brokers and dealers had a vear end dip of $79,000,000 to $1,529,000,000 but the total on January 4, was still $471,000,000 higher than a year earlier . The banks' holdings of U.S. government securities rose S45, 000.000 in the week ended Jan uary 4 to $37,514,000,000. and were up $4,030,000,000 on the year. If the ? imises are clogged by the discharge, the pressure may be great and often causes headaches in the forehead and around the eyes. The discharge is irritating, and when it drips down the back of the throat (the post-nasal drip), it causes a tick ling sensation and a cough. If the discharge is great enough, the individual may cough up consineraoie quantities oi u. Sinusitis often results from ex cessive use of nose drops during a case of C-R-I (the "common cold"). In most instances, nose drops do more harm than good. I think. The same clearing effect is more easily obtained by taK ing tablets to do the work. Your doctor can tell you what kind of tablets to use they may be ephedrine or similar drugs. How can nose drops cause sinusitis.' The answer is this: the drops are not only irritating (sufficiently so to cause even more inflamma tion of the mucous membranes) but they may also wash the bac teria into the sinuses to cause inflammation there too. So even when the C-R-I disappears. chronic sinusitis may persist for a long time. Since many cases of sinusitis start with an allergic state, treat ment directed toward the allergy is of value. By this I mean the use of antihistaminic drugs Sometimes a case of sinusitis will clear up by taking the antihista mines alone, ask your doctor, not me. about it. You can see that certain drugs can be of great value in the treat ment of sinusitis. Certainly your physician knows that. If he gives vou a DreseriDtion. use it.
