GIVE THE GROWIN Yesterday I gave here some general suggestions in regard to the nutrition of the growing child. I men tioned some foods which are particular ly important and desirable in the child's everyday diet. I did not and shall not waste your time or mine discuss ing things the child should Dr. Brady not eat. We had just reached a touchy point and I suppose I was off again on a harangue about giv ing me growing child a break you know, freedom to go out and play whenever the child en joys it, regardless of climate. season or weather a line of chatter which, I am well aware, irks some old fogie readers tre mendously and delights some in terests, for by such crarv talk I am playing right into their hands we had reached this touchy point when the bell, as it were, saved me. Well, this is another round. I'm coming out fighting, and this time I lead, not with my chin, but with my left. I hereby re iterate and declare with every ounce of conviction and assur ance I can put into it, and with the fervent hope that every kid in the country may read this or at least hear about it: INFANT, GROWING CHILD, YOUTH, ADULT OR OLD STER NEVER SUFFERS IN JURY TO HEALTH FROM EXPOSURE TO COLD OR DAMPNESS OR SUDDEN CHANGE. Chapping, chilblains, frostbite and freezing may occur from ex posure to cpld, of courso, but that is all. Yes, and sometimes exposure to cold causes consid erable discomfort for a while such as aching fingers but. I insist, never any illness or dis turbance of health. There is no scientific evidence that exposure to cold or damp ness or wet or bad weather has the slightest effect on any im munity an individual may have to any known disease. This cov ers not only what we KNOW about the nature and cause of diseases of the respiratory tract but also any quaint notions the old timers, medical or lay, may still retain in reference to "re hearing and settlement thereof. From many years of battling : at close quarters with tile cred-; ulous public and the nostrum : and quackery interests and the; old fogie school of medicine and ; the shrewd "clinic" racketeers and all-around "specialists" about this I have learned how difficult it is to persuade people to live free from that morbid fear cryprobia (morbid fear or dread of cold) and hygrophobia (morbid fear or dread of damp ness). I am as fond of solid comfort as you are, I suppose. In fact, I'll not complain it 1 never again see snow, ice or bitter cold weather right up close, but you bet your boot I'd never worry about the chance of getting pneumonia, rheumatism or any other illness from the climate or weather. Worrying about that, as I see It, is not only ab surd but bad for anybody's health. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The Butcher's Diet My husband is a butcher, spends much Ume in the Ice box. He com olains of Dain in knees. I wonder whether It is rheumatism or arthritis and whether he gets insufficient cal cium from is diet. (Mr. J. W.) Answer The exposure to cold has notning to 00 witn rneumaitsm or arlhrltii. in my opinion. If your hus band consumes insufficient milk or milk products (cheese, cream, butler, skim milk, buttermilk, sour milk, evaporated milk, etc.) and insuffic ient nuts, peanuts and greens (salad stuff) he probably gets insufficient caicium ana nis trouuie may oe a manifestation of calcium deficiency Send ten cents (clean) and stamped self addressed envelope or booklet "The Calcium Shortage". Remember that even an adequate intake of cal cium will not insure food nutrition unless there is an adequate supply of vitamin D to maintain normal as similation and utilization of calcium in the body.
