LOCAL and PERSONAL Books Presented Twelve volumes on the life of Abraham Lincoln have been presented to the city library by Mrs. W. H. Kucker of Medford in honor of her mother, the late Dr. Virginia C. Rigg- Dr. Rigg passed away several years ago. ON ffl Representatives of a dozen leading Oregon newspapers and wire services will start a 10-day tour of the state's industries at Klamath Falls tomorrow, Mon day, March 4. Sponsored jointly by the Na tional association of Manufactur- I ers and Columbia Empire Indus- ' tries, the tour will take the news men from Klamath Falls to Med ford, Roseburg, Eugene, Salem, Portland and Astoria. The reporters will visit at least two industrial plants each day to hear top management repre sentatives discuss reconversion problems and progress. A period is set aside after each talk for questions. At lunch each day the news , men will hear leading industrial- lists of each area tell their re jgion's prospects for business growth. A similar tour of Washington state industries will start March i 17. Washington, March 2 (U.R) The United States, Britain and France tonight postponed over the week-end a promised joint statement expected to demand the ouster of Gen. Francisco Franco's regime as the price of admitting Spain to the family of free nations. A State department spokes man said delays in drafting the final text of the statement by cable among officials in Wash ington, Paris and London were responsible for the postpone ment. He emphasized that no serious difficulties have arisen and said the three governments now hope to have the statement ready by Monday. It was scheduled orig inally to be made public today. The original proposal was drafted by the United States and submitted to Britain and France. They agreed in principle but ask ed minor changes. HEAD NAZI YOUTH 'TRIED TO RESIG Nuernberg, March 2 (U.R) Baldur von Schirach, Nazi youth leader and gauieiter for Austria, wanted to fly to the United States to dissolve the German American Bund and prevent war with Germany, but was refused permission by Hitler, his wife said in a statement today. The statement made in a letter to Schirach's attorney and made ; available exclusively to the United Press, said deputy Fueh rer Martin Eohrmann had called Schirach "unreliable." Attractive, 38-year-old Frau Henriette von Schirach said her j husband had sought to resign his j official and party posts. CAROLINA SOLON DEFENDS PAULEY Washington, March 2 (U.R) Sen. Olin D. Johnston, D., S. C, intensified an intra-party contro versy among senate democrats tonight by giving his support to Edwin W. Pauley's fight for con firmation as undersecretary of navy. Other democratic senators, meanwhile, predicted that the California oil man would drop the five - weeks old battle over his nomination as soon as he has answered charges made against him before the Senate Naval Af fairs committee. Johnston entered the contro versy with the declaration that Pauley is being "kicked around because he happens to be a man of wealth." Planing Mill Help Upstate Still Oat Portland. Ore., March 2 (U.R) A strike of 700 AFL planing mill workers throughout Oregon continued today with some minor easements as several small mills negotiated individual agree ments and resumed operations. Three Salem mills were idled when some 300 men walked off their Jobs to enforce demands for hourly wase increases of 20 cents but 19 mills in Portland, Albany, Newberg and Tigard continued working.
