Snell Turns Ground for , Start of Project Here Fos tered by C-C and Unions Governor Earl Snell, while in Medford Friday, broke ground for the "yardstick house" of the veterans' housing project spon sored by the Jackson county Chamber of Commerce, organ ized labor, and other organiza tions. The "yardstick house" will be constructed on a lot at Dakota and Grant streets, don ated to the project by the Med ford Realty board. Photographs of the actual breaking of ground were taken by Verne Shangle and will be published in the near future. A worker's permit was presented to Gov. Snell by Ethel Bush, secretary of the Central Labor Council. Others present were Charles W. Crary, business manager of the Electrical Workers union; Earl Garfield, secretary of the carpenters- local; George Patu cek, business manager for the Camenters' local: Verpn RaiUv secretary to Charles Crary; Joan mniara, employe in the local carpenters union office; Col. Elmer V. Wooton. state d irertnr of the Selective Service; W. H. r lulirer, president of the Cham ber of Commerce; E. L. Scott, chairman, and DiamnnH T. rivnn of the Veterans' Housing com- mntee; and Verne Shangle. Plans and specifications for the house were prepared by R. A. Berry of Medford and How ard R. Perrin of Klamath Falls, their services being donated. Or ganized labor is donatine its services for the construction work and business institutions of the city are donating the ma terial. The City of Medford is placing its eauiDment at disnnsal of the committee for grading, etc. The foundation will be laid the first of the week, anri it ic the expectation of the committee mat tne house will be started Saturday morning, March 9. The sponsors of the "varrt. stick house" are hopeful that business institutions in Medford will voluntarily contribute the material necessarv withnut nii. citation, thereby reducing the ume necessary lor completion of the project. It is also the hope of the soonsors that MfAfnrA business houses will furnish the house so that when it is placed on display for the public to in- SDOct. it will he rnmnlptB in every detail. Plans for the ulti mate disposal to some veteran are incomplete and can not be announced at this time, the sponsors said. The urgent need for homes for returning veterans has been the motivating influence of the pro- igram, and the sponsors feel that jit will not be necessary to urge the public to assist in making it I successful. It is the hope of the 'snnnsnrs that the ''vardstirk house" will influence owners of vacant property in Medford to follow some such a plan to pro vide emergency homes for our veterans. All donations toward the project should be made to the Chamber of Commerce, and any information desired may be had at that source. Bloomington, Ind., March 2 U.PJ A middleaged Sunday school leader and an attractive, brunette choir singer, who sang hymns together in the choir but created a scandal by their asso ciation outside the church, were found slain today in an aban doned stone quarry. The victims, both married were Russell Koontz, 43, official of the Empire Stone Quarry com pany and former Sunday school superintendent in the Christian church, and Mrs. Phyllis Cole man, 33, who worked in a cream ery company office. They had been beaten, bound, gagged and strangled. Koontz. his head crushed, was found with the woman's slip stuffed into his mouth. The bodies were ful ly clothed, except for Mrs. Cole man's slip.
