The state highway commis sion has formally accepted the gift of Judge Frank TouVelle of Jacksonville of 25 acres of land along the banks of the Rogue River near Bybee bridge as a state park site. Snow at Crater Lake Nation al park headquarters, measur ed this week, is the third heav iest for this period of the year since 1930, when records start. It measured 155.4 inches and had a water content of 68 4 inches as compared to 92.4 inches of snow with water con tent of 32 inches at the same time last year. Much additional snow falls in March and April. The heavy snowfall in the sur rounding hills means ample irrigating water for the com ing growing season. Visitor In the city today Is Gov. Earl Snell, here to attend a luncheon and present awards to selective service volunteer personnel. Rosenbaum, one of the city s outstanding bond workers. The annual drive for Red Cross funds starts today and F. L. Brewer, chairman, has an nounced a number of sub-chairmen. An unusual story originated In Jacksonville, where city offi cials had the circuit court re strain J. C. McKim from mining operations on F street, claiming the operations have made the street impassable. A hearing will be held next week. Back-yard mining operations have long been a familiar sight in the his toric town of Jacksonville. Medford JayCees enlivened their meeting this week by try ing Bob Schenck for "goose mur der," charging him with the mys terious disappearance of "Jun ior,' the membership goose. Cer tain bones were produced as evi dence, but the charges were dropped when Schenck found a new member for the organize-1 tion. Plans are being completed for erection of a model temporary dwelling for veterans by a Chamber of Commerce spon sored group. Medco announped in connection with the annual closure for repairs -and machin ery installation that between Jan. 9 and Feb. 22 the mill pro duced 10 million feet of lumber enough of which was sold in the Medford area to build 162 medi um sized homes. foundation for a new eight- band sawmill will be started next week, the new mill to be located near the highway north of town. The mill will be oper ated by the Elk Lumber com pany, managed by George C. r lanagan. Thorburn and Logoso of Se attle have been awarded a con tract for installation of new wat er mains in Central Point, their bid being $36,990. Work is to start in the near future. A cab inet shop is being constructed in Phoenix by G. L. Witte and Ralph and Walter Green have announced enlargement and re modeling of their fountain and news-stand at the corner of Main and Fir streets. Veterans who have gone into business recently include Donald Herried, recently discharged from the air corps where he held the rank of lieutenant, who has gone into business with his fath er, Medford realtor, and Herb Guenther, who with G. J. Wolff has purchased Strahan's Market on North Ivy street. Hal Carver, who spent three years in the navy, has re-opened his camera shop on East Main street and an other veteran, M. R. Brownrigg, is opening a repair shop in Phoe nix. Talk of the town centers around the new parking meters. Eighty-four violations were checked the first day and many amusing stories resulted, includ ing the one about the woman who dropped a coin down the pipe on which the meter head was yet to be installed. In spite of the griping, a Tribune poll of users indicated most people think they will improve the parking situation. Robert A. Naumes, who rose from private to major during four years in the army, and who never was able to return home for a visit during the entire four years, has been released from the army and is now in the city. McAllister, major in a military government detachment in France and Italy, have both re turned to the city, the former resuming his medical practice and McAllister his law practice. Major J. rU Lindley, who served two years in Calcutta with the War Shipping admin istration, visited briefly in Med ford and then left for Washing ton, D. C, for additional duty. Home permanently after be ing discharged are Jack C. Mor- an, who spent 17 months in Brazil with the air force; Thomas C. Tams, former torpe- doman who participated in the invasions of Normandy, Casa blanca and southern France; Floyd O. McClanahan, who served In Europe; Earl L. Mc Quigg, who spent eight months at a navy station on Saipan; Le- land R. Hall, who spent 18 duty with the medical corps in the South Pacific and Bill Hagen, in the navy 28 months. . Lt. S. T. Wharton has arrived from Korea and is on terminal leave, William J. Scheffel has enlisted in the coast guard, Nor man W. Vance has re-enlisted in the navy and Everett C. Daugh erty, George Meyer and George Cormie have enlisted in the army. Relatives of Lt. (jg) Theron H. Gleason have received the pur ple heart medal awarded posthu mously to him. Lt. Gleason, fighter pilot, was lost in action July 18 while on a flight off the USS Yorktown. Talent schools voted down the proposed merger of the- Talent and Phoenix schools in a special election last week. Phoenix res idents were for the venture. Rogue River VFW has purchased a site for a chapter house. Winners in the Americanism essay contest of the American Legion were Joan Hoppe and Pat Sether, first places; Claire Cordier and Sally Cooney, sec ond, and honorable mention, Bob Stevens, Shirley Tuffs, Charity Williams, Shirley Hutch inson,. Hitler and Pope Had Agreement Is Red Contention Moscow, March 1 U.R) The communist organ Pravda charg ed today that at the start of the German invasion of Russia. Pope Pius and Adolf Hitler con cluded an agreement under which the Pope would be per mitted to convert the Soviet people to Catholicism. The charge was made in a Pravda article written by Ivan Borisov. He said a French book by Gabriel Jarals proved that such an agreement was made. Catholic missionaries follow ed the SS, SA and Gestapo in to the occupied area by agree ment, Borisov said.
