Readers (tumid tddrmt Inquiries toi Ot. William Brady. 26S F.I Camilla B.T.rly Hills Calii. THE LITTLE GIRL For the first two or three years after the little girl across the way had learned how to walk, run and play we kept on cordial terms and I be g a n to think that maybe I had made a friend but it became evi dent that her parents didn't take any stock in my' teach ings espe cially about cold, dampness and clothing. All through the rainy season the poor kid was kept cooped up in the house and it irked me so that I felt some resentment and probably betrayed my feel ings in passing the time of day with her parents. I suppose they resented my attitude some too. Anyway, they queered my pitch by telling my little friend that Dr. Brady says little boys and girls must not drink pop, espe cially kinds of pop that contain caffeine or caffeine-like drug. I do say so, indeed but why make me the goat? Doesn't ev ery doctor or health advisor who is competent to have an opinion about it say the same thing? I feel bad about this because, in spite of the little girl's parents' cryophobia (morbid or irrational fear of cold) and hygrophobia (morbid or irrational fear of dampness) we were in a fair way to build a great friendship, this delightful child and I. The whole thing was wrecked when the be nighted parents, having trained the child to drink pop. one kind containing caffeine-like stimu lent, now made a sorry apology for their error by telling the child that "Dr. Brady says it is not good for little girls." That was more than our budding friendship could stand. There after the young lady's greeting, formerly so cordial, became a jeer or a taunt to the effect that she had just had a glass of pop and she was going to have some more pretty soon, so there. Seriously, though, I do feel sorry for that child. The more pop, pap and lollypops, cheat food she receives the poorer her nutrition will be, and inevitably as she grows ( or fails to grow) into girlhood and young woman hood her health, vite and good looks will suffer. After all it is just as easy to train a child to drink milk, lem onade, orangeade, tomato juice, when any beverage other than water is needed, and these drinks not only refresh but sup ply minerals and vitamins which every child needs to keep him healthy and happy. Mind, now, 1 do not believe or teach that children and youths may not indulge in can dy, ice cream, sugar, syrup or sweets in general. On the con trary I assure you that children, youths or adults who play hard or work hard (muscular work) can take extra amounts of sweetswilh advantage, and in deed It is a fundamental prin ciple of physiology that the child who plays hard actually heeds more of such things sugar, can- DANCE TONIGHT Music by MITCHELL McGWYNN AND HIS CALIFORNIANS FOR THE DIAGRAMLESS FANS Crossword Puzzle aXBOSS 1 Scorched s Bi hi i to olreui It LOTM UMutva of auronseoT II Bpeniab abbr. Is this too many? i Mrs. U D.t Answer No. Excellent food (or child or adult, and there are too many imaginary reasona for eating or not eating, cooking or not cook ing eggs. Child or adult may eat eggs as he or she liken raw, soft boiled, hard-boiled, tried. ail same food; as often as he likes: as many as he likes. Cold Sores I spent two years in a flying school on the desert. There all pilou, and other personnel regularly took salt tablets, during the summer, and there were few cold sores ifex-er blisters, herpes). But many pilou thought they could omit the salt tab lets tn the winter time, not realizing that the air was still extremely dry and took much water from their bodies even in the winter. I eontinu cd taking the salt tablets the year around and naa no cold sores. The pilots and others who stopped taking salt in the winter had many cold sores. There it is, for what it is worm. (Mn. A. B. J.I Answer Thank you. Ma am. There may be a good deal in your inter esting' observation. Herpes is prob ably a virus infection. When the fluid from a herpetic vesicle is inoculated in a ribbit it will produce keratitis Icorneal inflammation). In some cases of herpes (cold sores) on the face, there is very serious corneal (oye) involvement (inflammation, ulcer) and damage to eye.sight icor neal opacities) when the ulcer final ly heals. One of the most effective remedies is iodine applied by the doctor, of course after application of a local anesthetic. Superior, Wyo., a community of 3,000 persons, has only two telephones.
