Rapid Antedate Of Weapons of War Is Seen By Professor Berkeley, Cal. (U.R) A re cently released captain of the Naval Reserve, who has return ed to his science laboratory, says that military strategists cannot map the security ol the nation for more than five years in advance. The scientist. Dr. Leonard B. Loeb, professor of physics on the Berkeley campus of Uni versity of California who was assigned to Naval scientific re search during hostilities, forsees possible new inventions which will antedate all present wea pons. Professor Loeb, writing in a Naval ordnance laboratory pub lication, says that the five-year estimate may be too long, but "it certainly is not too short." "It is possible that a new fun damental discovery .might lead to devices materially altering strategy and tactics, which reach fruition in less than five years," Professor Loeb stated. "For example, devices called radar and derived from the de velopment of the powerful high frequency oscillators, needed in the studies of nuclear reactions were initiated by the atom smashers in the early 1930's," he explained. "It is possible, that other de vices might mature more quickly," he warned. France currently receives an average of nine billion units monthly from America, and was promised 30 billion for Janu ary. Gore) With a meticulously selected group of stars and soloists from their large company of ballet dancers, Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin, two of the greatest exponents of classic ballet on the boards today, brought to Medford last night under the management of Civic Concert Service, Inc., an unprecedented extravaganza of classic dancing art. Classic and romantic gems from famous ballets were pre sented, featuring these two great artists and Ana Ricardo and Al bia Kavan. The larger organiza tion has been touring the coun try appearing in the great cen ters of musical and artistic cul ture, with, elaborate scenery, stage sets and symphony orches tra, but this smaller group, though preserving the highest tradition of ballet dancing, Is adapted to successful presenta tion in small cities where large auditoriums and elaborate stag ing are Impracticable. Art Impresses Though there were plenty of patrons In the audience that filled the auditorium who under stood in a non-professional way the varied beauty and intricacies of the adagio, arabesque, deml plie, port de bras, batterie, pointes and the mechanical pat tern of the ballet, people in general were less concerned with the exquisite details of perfect technique than they were in line. color and beauty of the dance as seen In front of a simple back drop with artistic and adequate lighting effects. Dancing as a medium of emo tional self-expression is a very ancient art, used alike by peas ants and kings, but the perfec tion of detail demanded by classic ballet dates back a hun dred years or more and is not to be attained except by deep study, constant practice and the promotion of an ideal through Imagination and the blending of knowledge of the related arts painting, drama and music. In Three Parts The program last night was In three parts, the first of which was inspired by the magical beauty of the music of Chopin and contained seven numbers. These were Illuminated for the spectator by the fact that most of the melodies were familiar and long cherished classics, thus the eye was free to see and the mind was focused on the tech nique which produced interpre tation In bodily grace and move ment. The second group was a suite of romantic dances which In cluded "Vestris Solo," a vehicle for the strength, power and artis try of Anton Dolln and the "Pas de Quatre" by Alicia Markova. Jean Engel, Albia Kavan "and Ana Ricardo. Inspired by four great dancers of the nineteenth century and possessing, in addi tion to all the requirements of ballet, an amusing anecdote of historic significance, this num ber, and also "The Polka," featuring in addition Jack Gans wer, were favorites with the audience. The third group was famous dances from 'The Nutcracker Suite" by Tschaikowsky. To the ensemble were added Fay Rachel and Jack Cooper. Each number was received with mounting en thusiasm, climaxed in the haunt ing rhythm of the "Waltz of the Flowers," given in ultra-classic form by the soloist and ensemble. The interpretive work of the orchestra was much appreciated and was characterized by de lightful two-piano excerpts. Next concert of this series Is Selma Kaye, dramatic soprano. who will appear Monday, March 11. Paul B.
