Frank Hirt, army Ir force mechanic, and the world-wide network of nazi spies with whom he Is accused of con spiring to trade U. S, military secrets for German cash. Moritr Buser, confessed Swiss member of the Hitler spy ring already serving a prison term, said In a deposition introduced in Hirt's court martial that he knew the 31-year-old defendant and had given him $4000 to be used for espionage purposes in the United States. In Novem ber of that year, he said, he re ceived a phone call from a man ho identified himself as "Wil lie," and when "Wiille" arrived in person it was Frank Hirt. In the deposition, he described how he picked Hirt's photograph out of a series of pictures for both Swiss police and later American counter-intelligence officers. Few of us have not learn ed this trick; a mental anesthe sia we give ourselves as a pro tection when sermons are long and dull; or when one has to wait for a bus. So the people waited, some with shoulders hunched and el bows propped on knees; others lolled in seat corners; still oth ers stood and looked out at street activities which they never saw. Then a young mother started combing her little daughter's hair, a red-headed two year old. Little Red-head didn't want her hair combed. She not only didn't want it combed, she was actively and vociferously opposed to the operation. If uncombed hair meant she looked like a kewpie hag, so be it. But Mother was larger and stronger than she and as the comb sought and found a tangle, the midget standing on the seat threw herself into renewed fury. Chubby arms played the air; there were shrill treble shrieks; tears of suffering and rage coursed down the plump cheeks. The two-by-twice had our sym pathy all right, but just the same there was something bcquilingly lovely in the enrnged swirl of the butterfly skirt, In the tem pestuous stompings of the wee slippered feet. A wave of lively interest swept the crowd, replac ing the 'former apathy. We watched with alert eyes as the comb swept down over the bright pate and on into the lengths of golden hair. The comb would meet a tangle and the scrap of red-headed dyna mite exploded into new frenzy. We admired the mother's con cern for her child's appearance but we winced as each tangle was met; sighed with relief when it was conquered and the comb went into the ends where the going seemed easier. Those ends! They were a bright froth over the small shoulders. They might seem free of tangles but I knew those ends had been curled round and imprisoned the hearts of all who watched; art entagle ment no comb could eradicate. JOHN DAY APPOINTED ON ALUMNI COUNCIL University of Oregon, Eugene, Feb. 25 Ernest Haycox, Port land, University of Oregon Alu mni association president, recent ly announced the appointment of John Day, Medford, and Earl Blackaby, Ontario, to member ship on the alumni association council. Day, at present alumni direc tor for Jackson county, succeeds Otto Frohnmayer, whose term expired in December. Blackaby, a graduate of the university with the 1915 class, will be the Mal heur county director.
