IN PACIFIC AREA
Stressing the economic oppor
tunities which await the people
of thia nation and the major
ptoplea of the Far East, Haw
thorne Daniels, globe-trotting
author, correspondent and lec
turer, addressing members of
the Rogue River Knife and
Fork club and their guests at
the Roosevelt school auditorium
Friday night on the subject,
"America's New Pacific Em
pire," explained that a great
future for America lies in in
vestment toward industrialize
tion of nations in the Pacific
Indian ocean area where vast
sources are available.
Stating that he was "opposed
to America perennially being
Santa Claus," Daniels said that
investment in economic devel
opment of the Pacific nations
would aid them to help them
selves even as European capital
built our own industry follow
ing the Civil war.

Geography was shown by Dan

affairs of men. He pointed out
that "continents, not oceans, di

Atlantic ocean area and the Pa

main divisions.
Industry Traced
Mr. Daniels traced Industrial

the economic era in England
showing its ascendancy in the
United States backed by British
aid and experience until our na

trial country of the world after
the first great war. Today, "out
side America there are no indi

However, the speaker express

day America has no purpose.
Our people have the individual
purpose to get while the getting
is good, which is not right for
the nation, he said.
"We have forgotten our basic
duty of citizenship," Daniels
said, "our problems are beyond
solution of any one human being
and we need more leaders of
thought and action."
He urged a return of powers
from the national government
to the states and to the people,
emphasizing that "We the peo
ple rule the land if we will.'

LIVE WITHIN CITY
Medford's water commission
lias found it necessary to again
halt receiving applications from
would-be water users outside the
city limits, it was announced
Saturday by Commission Super
intendent Robert A. Duff. The
ruling affects all applications
filed since Nov. 7, 1945.
The official explained that be
cause of the great amount of
residential building springing up
within the city, and the already
numerous new consumers out
side the city, it has become
necessary to renew the rule
which was first adopted when a
supply of water was pledged for
Camp White.
The restriction was lifted last
fall when construction of the
third reservoir was started, Duff
said, adding, however, that the
commission has since been flood
ed with applications. The pre
sent supply line from Big Butte
springs will not carry enough
water to the reservoirs to sup
ply present and expected city
consumption if additional outside
permits are granted, the super
intendent stated.
