It does not invalidate this dictum in the least that occasion ally some one continues breath ing for years beyond the aver age span of life without a tooth in his or her head. I believe every sound tooth is worth at least- well, I'd have to be in desperate need before I'd sell one of my sound teeth for a thousand dol lars. I believe most people who attain hearty old age and enjoy it still have most of their own teeth or darn good dentures to chew with. According to insurance statis tics, among Britons aged 16 to 19 years who seek dental treat ment 12 need a complete set of artificial teeth That is dreadful to contemplate. Old England is in bad shape all around. Roast beef, treacle and tea can hardly maintain good nutrition in Eng land, nor can white flour, sugar and steak build and maintain sound teeth in America. A news picture in a British publication shows a cabinet member and a ship's stoker the two men are laughing and both of them show shockingly neglected teeth ug ly spaces from which teeth are missing. Apparently the British people have lower per capita consumption of milk and milk products, greens and fruits, and get less sunshine or diffuse day light on naked skin than Ameri cans do. Another reason for the more rapid physical degeneration evinced by this state of the teeth of Britons is the Indifferent den tistry they have in England, Scotland and Wales, compared with . the American standard, which is beyond question the finest dentistry in the world. Here in America a white collar worker, a mechanic, a teacher or a member of his or her fam ily visits the dentist again and again for treatments or for a fill ing or an inlay or other measure which will save the tooth or at least give the patient a chance. In England the ordinary patient with a decayed tooth cither wor ries along without treatment or has the tooth extracted. Not in variably, but this is generally so. We certainly place a greater value on our teeth than the Brit ish do, but we are inspired more by considerations of personal ap pearance than by considerations of health and longevity.
