Newspaper Page TextHEAVY SPENDING Pacific Telephone and Tele graph company's expansion pro gram for 1946, now well under way, will require an all-time high expenditure of $90,000,000 according to N. R. Powley, pres ident, who released the figures with the firm's 1945 annual re port to shareholders received here today by R. H. Hammond, Medford manager for the com pany. The five-year program calls for expenditure of $400, 000,000 for construction, the president said. Although the firm experi enced exceptional growth throughout the war years, it did not profit from the war, the president declared, citing the fact that earning per common share in 1939 were $7.87, where as in 1945 they declined to $6.78 and dividends per common share declined from $7.50 to $6.50. Commenting on the war years, Powley declared that in the six years subsequent to Dec. 31, 1939, the firm handled new in stallations, discontinuances and moves totaling 7,297,029, or al most four times as many tele phones as it had in service at the begnmng of the period. "Total originating calls were more than 4,600,000,000, an in crease of more than 299,000,000 calls over 1944," Powley said, "and toll and long distance calls Increased 2 per cent. Clause, night officer on the city police force, filed a dam age suit against the Southern Pacific railroad for $10,000 gen eral damages and $2,500 special damages in Circuit court yester day as the result of an auto-box car crash on the Sixth street crossing, In the early evening of Feb. 25, 1944. Clause claims In his complaint that while driving on Sixth street he was crashed into by a box car, suddenly bumped across the street by a locomotive and that no warning of any kind was given. It is further set forth that Clause sustained six broken ribs, a cut knee and bruises and abrasions as a result of the crash, and that he still suffers. New 'Ham & Eggs' Pension Plan For California Voters Sacramento, Feb. 15 U.R) A new "ham and eggs" pension plan appeared on the Capitol scene today with filing of title for an initiative constitutional amendment designed primarily to give a 30-dollars-every-Thurs- day pension to persons over 50 years of age or unable to work. Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan said sponsors of the pro posal must obtain 178,764 signa tures of registered voters In the next 90 days to qualify the measure for a place on the No vember election ballot. Pro ponents of the measure were Willis Allen and Roy G. Owens of Los Angeles, leaders of sev eral previously defeated pension plans.
