Norm Worthley's Medford Jun ior high quintet will tackle Rose burg junior high in the 6:30 p. m. preliminary. Roseburg, coach ed by the veteran and colorful Hod Turner, promises to give the local juniors a tough time ofH. Tonight's clash will be the fourth between Ashland and the Tornado with Medford taking the other three. The last en counter, played at Ashland, was a tough one and Coach Al Simp son said he was expecting a hard-to-lick Ashland quintet to take to the court tonight. Medford's defensive tactics will be designed to stop Jim Jandreau and Gordon Peterson, Ashland's scoring threats, Simp son said. Worthley and Chuck DeAutremont will referee. GRIEVE TO CLASH WITH ELKS Ashland, Feb. 15 Ruben stein's one of Willamette val ley's strongest independent bas ketball teams, will meet the Ash land Elks on the SOCE floor here Saturday night, it was an nounced today. The Rubes will be led by Cal Bonney, highest scorer in the Eu-I gene city league of which the team is a member. Bonney was a cage sensation at Mount Angel college before the war. Dick Fawcett and Glenn Bost wick, a pair of ex-Medford high stars, will lead the Elks attack. Game time is 8 p. m. and there will be no preliminary, It was stated. Girl Scout Signed By Phils In Bid To Get Out of Cellar Philadelphia, Feb. 15 (U.R) The Philadelphia Phillies, who through the recent years often played like a bunch of Girl Scouts, came up with something drastic today in their efforts to get out of the cellar they hired a girl scout. The lady ivory hunter is Edith Houghton, a 33-year-old discharg ed Wave and she thinks she is ready to bring the Phillies a "wave of talent." Although she will be consign ed shortly to the bushes and the prnss-rnnHs tn search for strong- armed pitchers, heavy hitters and other likely rookies, sne is no baseball "Babe in the woods." A former star player herself, she was on such top flight femi nine teams as the New York Bloomer Girls, the Philadelphia Bobbles, and the New York Roverettes, all of them capable of putting on a first class dia mond girlie show. Lengthy Bob Karstens, who delighted the capacity crowd with a "victory" juggling act following the final horn, was the chief fun-maker of the evening. His top caper came In the third canto when he gave referee Frank O'Nlell an eye exam, complete with horn-rimmed spectacles and chart, for calling a foul on the David's Ralph Mil ler. A few moments later an in fraction was charged on Bob Hallisey, David forward, prompt ing Karstens to pick up a pop gun at the sidelines and take a pot shot at O'Nlell. Wave Does Trick The bewhiskered visitors caught the Elks flat-footed time after time with the pay-off com ing when Bob Hallisey spun for an easy crack at the hoop after pulling the Elks' Dick Fawcett off guard with a simple wave of the hand. Keep-away artists, the Davids generally had con trol of the game whenever they wanted it, but the tilt was close most of the distance. Score at the wind-up of the starting canto was 11-11 and the bearded boys led 23-20 at the half after over coming an 18-13 Elk advantage. Plans Merchandise Shoot Central Point, Feb. 15 Ini tiating their newly installed auto matic trap, the Central Point Sportsmen's club will hold a merchandise shoot Sunday at the club grounds west of town. Lefty O'Doul and company left yesterday afternoon aboard the SS Aleutian which is sched uled to arrive at Honolulu next Wednesday. The 45-man group included players, trainers, news men and a special guest 74-year-old Bill Lange, famous big league star of the 1890's. This is reportedly the first time a Pacific coast league club has ventured to the islands for spring training. Seal President Charley Graham estimates the club will pay $35,000 for the privilege, but he expects to get all expenses plus a net profit back from gate receipts for ex hibition games in Honolulu stadium. Tom Hamilton, navy's new football coach, was en route to Annapolis today after warning professional football clubs against making "bums" out of great athletes. "They must keep uppermost their responsibility to the boys who play the game," Hamilton said. "Certainly we can't afford to make bums out of great ath letes. "The Green Bay Packers and certain others have the right idea in building a business fu ture for the men while they play.
