Hogan Breaks Winning Texas San Antonio, Tex., Feb. 11 U,R) Ben Hogan, the little man with the big swing, headed for New Orleans today with a new Texas open record, first prize money ot $1,500 and a set of very hot golf clubs in his posses sion. Hogan, the former Texas Caddy, was one of the favorites to win the $7,500 New Orleans open which' start Thursday. Byrd Trails It was Hogan's day yesterday and even though the defending champion, Sammy Byrd, match ed him stroke for stroke, he couldn't reduce the margin be tween them and finished six strokes behind. Hogan's 72-holo total of 264 broke the old Texas open record by four strokes. His final round of 64. which was seven under par, was within one stroke of tying the 18-hole Brackenridge course record of 63. In the coast conference north ern division, Oregon State and Idaho were deadlocked for the leadership after the Vandals' 35 to 33 victory over Washington State Saturday night. McKinney Elected President Of Athletic Ass'n Earl E. McKinney, 423 Laurel street, was unanimously elected president of the Medford Ath letic association at a board of directors meetings held at the Chamber of Commerce office yesterday morning. McKinney replaces C. C. Proctor who has held the office for the past year. O. M. TORNADO TACKLES With the Southern Oregon conference championship all sewed up, Medford high's Black Tornado travels to Ashland to night for a king's-X clash with the Ashland Grizzlies, holding precariously on to third place. The Grizzlies will return the visit here Friday night in the final conference game for the Tornado. Medford travels to Eugene to take on the University of Ore gon Frosh tomorrow night and will meet Salem at Salem next Monday and Tuesday nights. The league asked that Hono lulu confine , its play to the islands, with other league mem bers visiting there, presumably Hoop Tournament Plans Ready For Class "B" Event Southern Oregon College, Ashland, February 9 Plans for the Southern Oregon College Invitational basketball tourna ment scheduled for the South ern Oregon College gymnasium on March 6-7-8-9 are moving ahead rapidly with only four weeks remaining before game time, according to R. W. Mc Neal, tournament director. First games will be called for the afternoon of Wednesday, March 6, with every team enter ed scheduled to play.
