R. Bowman said this morning. Petitions, one from Phoenix bearing 113 signatures and the other from Talent with 79 names listed have been filed with Bowman "ho is sec retary of the boundary board. Bowman declared that the elec tion would undoubtedly occur within the next two weeks, State law requires that three notices be posted in each district for 10 days prior to the voting, One notice in each district must be placed at the school and the others in prominent places, Who May Vote Bowman emphasizes that the only ones allowed to vote are citizens of the United Stages who are 21 years of age, who have been residents of the district for 30 days immediately preceding the election and who are shown by the last assessment rolls to be subject to a tax on real or personal property within the district (that is, one whose name is on the last assessment rolls), Ownership of stock in a com pany, corporation or partner ship within the district is accept able in lieu of property qualifl. cation. However, one cannot at tain voting eligibility by having the sheriff enter his name on the tax rolls after the assessor has turned the rolls over to the sher iff. Superintendent Bowman and school officials have stressed that the petitions are not to be used as a measure of favoritism toward the merger as signers have merely Indicated their wil lingness to stage an election on the proposal. Southwick of 915 West Tenth street, Medford passed away at the Veterans' Hospital in Portland Tuesday Funeral services will be held in the A. J. Rose and son chapel in Portland at 11 a. m. Saturday with inteiment in Lincoln Me morial park, Portland. Mr. Southwick had recently completed a three-year contract as a storekeeper with the naval air base at Kodiak, Alaska. He was brought to the naval hos pital in Seattle for emergency treatment and later transferred to the Portland hospital. The deceased was born at Wal lowa Jan. 1, 1801. He was a vet eran of the first world war, hav ing served in the navy. Survivers are his wife, Edith who resides at the family ad dress, and two daughters, Mrs. Doris Root Medford, and Mrs. Betty Jo Daugherty, Darby, Pa. Other survivors are his father, Emmett E. Southwick of San Diego, Calif., and several broth ers and sisters, Mrs. Ruth Wil son, San Diego, Elmer and Otho Southwick of Wallowa, Fred of Roseburg, Frank, Lawrence and Maurice, all of San Diego. Mrs. Southwick and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Root left last eve ning for Portland. Fi E SOCE Enrollment Largest Since '41 Southern Oregon College, Ash land, Feb. 8 Final registration figures for the winter term at tbe Southern Oregon college shows a larger enrollment than at any time since the spring of 1941-1942 according to Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, president. Winter enrollment this year of 1S4 students is an increase of 136 per cent over the same period a year ago. Women in creased 36 per cent and men-538 per cent. Seventy-seven per cent of all men enrolled at the college are veterans, most of whom are attending under the G.I. bill. Students enrolled in Junior college offerings and the secre tarial science curriculum ac count for 64 per cent of the total number enrolled. Transfer of the Butte Falls fish hatchery in Jackson county to the Oregon state game com- misison from the U. S. fish and wildlife service was completed on Februaiy 8. according to an announcement today by the com mission. The transfer included all land, buildings, troughs, grinders, cold storage plant and usual .fish cultural equipment. This will constitute one of the finest stations of the commission as it has an excellent water sup ply, and it will serve principally the waters in the Rogue river watershed. The transfer was made pursuant to senate bill 131 introduced in congress by Sen ator Guy Cordon.
