Olive Barber's Letter I I have read my share on the "why" of child behaviour but it never explained the average child's passionate preference for a tin dipper over a glass from which to drink. You might say it is due to the novelty of the thing, which would be true of to day yet as far back as I can re member, kids preferred dippers to glasses. One of the delights of starting to school was that I shared the school dipper. To take my turn at that dipper, drink and thrift ily toss back what remained truly, I was at long last going to school It would be several years before I would be old enough to demand my turn at passing the bucket, but taking my turn at the dipper was next best. Sometimes the dipper was a gourd; a long handled gourd made a fine dipper. Remember ing those gourd dippers and the scrofulous and prolific offspring of one neighborhood couple, I wonder we survived. Maybe we had built up an immunization. Certainly, we wooed germs in every possible manner. Boys in particular. No boy would risk being called a sissy by using a sponge on his slate. But back to dippers. For 20 years, here at Hillside, we drank water the dipper-bucket way. Oh, we did the right thing by guests and had they but known, they would have told their rat ing with me by the lesser or greater magnificence of the glass I gave them to drink from. And let a child once experi ence the marvelous feel of the long bright handle in its hand, well it did nothing but drink un til its mother insisted they leave. I've seen a flat little midriff swell and swell far past what I would have thought was its In flation limit. But the tot was on a water binge and nothing could stop it. Now we have modern plumb ing and the long handled tin dipper is no more, I would not want to go back, but just the same well, I get to thinking of hot and grubby little hands grasping the cool length of the dipper handle, of how round were the eyes which would peer at me over the rim of the dipper. Water would run down a chin, and on down, soaking pinafore or blouse. And there would be a special gleam In those childish eyes. - A dipper-candle gleam, you might say. Yes sir, the good old days!
