PROFESSIONAL, AMATEUR OR FAN In this land of make-believe it has not alarmed any significant number of educators, physicians o r legislators to learn that the youth of the land is weaker, softer, less fit for mil' 1 1 a r y service or for peace time living than was the youth of the preceding gen eration. Least Dr. Brady " V " youngfolk K 11 .U themselves feel any concern about this national decline atrophy which is shown by the great numbers of young men who were rejected as unfit to fight in World War II. Don't try to deceive yourself that this is just my peculiar notion. What worries me next to the fright ful increase in alcoholic indul gence in youth and the absurdly easy or phony divorce racket conducted by some corrupt States is the sad truth the fig ures tell. Before you form any snap judgment or utter any half baked view of the matter you had better consult the records of the number of rejections of registrants under selective serv ice in-World War I and in World War II in proportion to the to tal examined. It is my opinion that this flab biness and weakness of the modern youth in America is due mainly to our characteristic Yankee enthusiasm for pooh- poohing, ignoring and evading elementary physical education in and out of school. The other 999 show a yellow streak or what will in evitably become a yellow streak by refusing to make more than a half-hearted effort to ac quire skill, agility or proficiency in any athletic activity or game They prefer to participate in the performance vicariously sports or fans. Being a fan may have been less harmful fifty years ago when most young people, wheth er they wanted to or not, got a reasonable amount of exercise in walking and in riding bi cycles, than it is today with transportation of one kind or an other so handy and swift. Every youngster and aren't we all till the last scene of all? should devote himself to one or more bodily activities, what ever he or she likes to do or play and make the game, pas time of hobby a part of his- or her regular living program. I commend such muscular ac tivity, work or play, particular ly to people who are "nervous," irritable, excitable, and to peo ple whose blood pressure is too high. Ideal for one who has not taken much exercise heretofore is a daily waik. Not necessarily six miles of oxygen on the hoof every day at first, but a distance and a pace sufficient to make you a little tired. Walking is fine all-around exercise for any body, and the daily stint can be graduated to suit your individ ual condition and need. E, Sacramento, Feb. 6 (U.R) The state assembly today sent to Gov. Earl Warren for signa ture or veto the 'controversial bill granting $90,000,000 to cities and counties for local public works. Final approval of the bill by the assembly was on a 54 to 12 vote. The action was concurring in senate changes in the bill. Earlier the bill was amended to prevent any person from drawing more than 23 weeks of benefits for both unemployment and illness. As introduced, it would have allowed sickness benefits of up to $20 a week for not more than 23 weeks in ad dition to similar unemployment bcenfits for a like period. The measure would enforce a week's waiting period before benefits for a like period.
