Was it just happenstance that ne ae- scribed it just that way? Last scene of all, that endr this strange eventful his tory, ii second childish n e s s and more ob 1 i v i o n, sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans Dr. Brady everything. Or did he mean to imply that when you lose your teeth; you're about ready to turn up your toes, even though you still can see large print and tell the dif ference between sweet and bit ter? As I say, I'm reciting truth and r ; poetry when I say the first key to vite is Save Your Teeth. ' Nor am I indulging in a flight of fancy when I express the opinion that loss of one or more teeth and failure to replace them immediately with function ally efficient dentures is a com mon cause of every-day com plaints, of stomach trouble, acid ity, gas, indigestion, bloating, heartburn, "mucous colitis" and the like. Impairment or crip pling of the function of chewing, masticating food, inevitably in terferes with normal digestion, because an important part of the digestion of starchy food normal ly takes place in the mouth dur ing mastication and continues for half an hour or more after the food has entered the stomach. This is not my notion it is phy siology as you will find if you refer to any modern textbook of physiology, i I do hope that no one reading this will infer that if his or her teeth are missing and he or she hasn't the price or the sense to get new teeth, the alternative is to avoid starchy foods. It is true that the arctic explorers Stef- ansson and Andersen lived for a year on an exclusive meat diet, under constant observation and study of physicians, physiolo gists and pathologists, and both men finished the year In rather better all-round condition than they had shown at the beginning of the experiment. But for most people, here in America, starchy foods ordinar-1 ily must a.-d should furnish most I of the daily calorics and by I starchy foods I mean such foods as wheat and wheat products, potato, corn, rice, oats, beans. Our knowledge of the import- i ant part the teeth play in diges tion and in good nutrition. health, vite, longevity, physical efficiency is comparatively new so new that it has scarcely permeated the consciousness of j many a practicing physician, to say nothing of the practicing dentist. Indeed, to read some of the most pretentious medical textbooks published within the last few years you would get the impression that absence of half a dozen or more teeth from the patient's mouth is of no con sequence as long as the few teeth still surviving are not har boring a hypothetical septic' fo cus. I fear that few medical practitioners insist on patients sans teeth having suitable den tures installed. A magazine published a pic ture of a ship's stoker and a British cabinet minister both men laughing and displaying yawning spaces where their teeth once were.
