Car Damaged Charley Mc Callister, route 1, reported to police yesterday that consider able damage was caused his car when parked in a Sixth street service station. McCallister told officers the car was backed into and a door forced open. Nothing was reported missing, police said. Horn From Army Former technical sergeant with the army signal corps, Lewis A. (Bud) Rose, returned Tuesday to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Rose, 429 South Front street. Rose arrived in the Unit ed States last week from Korea after 13 months in the Pacific theater as a member of the 3rd signal battalion, being stationed for some time on Okinawa. Correction The name of Royal Delbert Cooley, student at Oregon State college, was Inad vertently omitted from the list of honor roll students at the col lege published yesterday. Cooley, whose Medford home Is at 648 Palm street, is enrolled in busi ness and industry. Miss Dor othy Durst, also named on the j honor roll, is the daughter of Mrs. John Mace, Central Point. Childress Home Ray Chil dress, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Childress, route 1, Central Point, returned home Thursday following honorable discharge from the army. He returned to the States Jan. 13 from service in the Pacific theater. Childress, who served a short time with the 41st division during the be ginning of the war, has spent 18 months with the army of late and spent nine months as a cor poral with the transportation corps in Manila. He was graa uated from Central Point high school in 1939. Only four men have been executed in the Wyoming state penitentiary lethal gas chamber since it was Installed aDout iu years ago. (U.R) Gas turbine powered automobiles are in prospect within the next 10 years, but there never will be Jet- propelled cars, according to ex perimental engineer Paul Pitt of Solar Aircraft. Pitt, specialist in jet and tur bine fields, explained that "In order to utilize a straight jet or a turbo-jet engine, the object propelled must approach the speed of the jet. A car going 50 miles an hour in front of a 700-mile-per-hour jet would burn up fuel too fast. Not only that, Pitt declared, but the straight jet and turbo- Jets are Inefficient and imprac tical for commercial aviation. Fuel Consumption High "In the next 10-15 years the turbo-jet engines will be used for military purposes only, be cause they can't operate at high enough speed for commercial flights and their fuel consump tion is too high to compete with even reciprocating engines." Pitt thinks the gas-turbine en gine is the answer. "It will be used on high-speed airplanes where economy Is also import ant. Commercially it will re place the conventional engines, although it also drives a pro peller." The engineer explained that the gas-turbine engine provides oxygen and pressure injected fu3l on the same idea that a straight jet engine propels a plane ty backward-thrust. Gas "Most Practical" "As a matter of fact, every modern aircraft power plant to day uses some form of Jet even ihe most conventional recipro cating engines. They all have some kind of turbine forcing fluid into combustion chambers at least," Pitt said the German V-l and V-2 buzzbombs were classic ex amples of the straight jet-pro pulsion engine, which burns It self and its missile out when it gets into atmospheric levels. "But the gas-turbine engin'- Is the most practical answer it is compact, eliminating torque and drag, can be pushed near the speed of sound, and is economi cal." Austrian Lottery Intended To Raise Rebuilding Funds Vienna U.P) Austrian Provisional Government Intends to run a 100,000,000-mark lot tery to raise funds for the re construction of the country, ac cording to a spokesman of the Ministry ot Finance. In addition to raising funds for construction purposes, the lottery also will help the government with the reconversion of occupation shil lings and relchmarks. The public will get only 30, 00'j.COO marks as winnings and the rest "ill be used by the government to reduce the quan tity of currency now in circula tion. Austrian are eager to buy these lottery tickets before the devaluation of the present cur rency, because it will give them a chance to get rid of their marks.
