INVESTIGATION OF URGED BY SMITH Washington, Jan. 31 (U.R) The Hev. Gerald L. K. Smith to day urged the House Un-American committee to investigate radio commentator Walter Win chell and movie stars Eddie Can tor, Frank Sinatra, Ingrid Berg man, and Edward G. Robinson. Smith, head of the America First party and one-time asso ciate of the late Huey P. Long, described himself to the com mittee as "Just an old-fashioned, Bible - believing, Christ - loving American." He charged that a "left-wing cabal" is seeking to destroy foes of communism by branding them fascistic, anti-Semitic and anti labor. A "thorough and cour ageous investigation," he added, would establish that Winchell Is part of that "conspiracy." - Sinatra Branded "Frank Sinatra, who on the surface seems to be just a highly paid emaciated crooner." Smith continued, "recently gave his support to a meeting of the American Youth for Democracy . . . which was branded by (FBI Director) J. Edgar Hoover as the successor to the young commun ist league." Smith charged that Eddie Cantor helped to finance activi ties of the mobilization for de mocracy which, he continued, is "an out-and-out communist out fit." A. Johnson and Commission er L. M. Mitchell. The officials explained that the county has no funds with which to improve this road to the point where It could be used for hauling logs from the rich stands of ripe fir on government owned property tapped by the Happy Camp road. They felt th:it such improvement could be accomplished by having the road taken into the forest service highway system. Improvement by widening and straightening the Happy" Camp road would permit sale of a vast stand of timber now ready for market in that area, it was ex plained by Commissioner Mit chell and C. W. Thornberry. manager of the Chamber of Commerce. Most of this timber is fir, with some cedar and pine. Tennyson's Brook Facing Fade Out London, Jan. 31 U.PJ The brook made famous by Lord Alfred Tennyson is in danger of disappearing. The Spilsbury rural council in Lincolnshire is considering a plan of its water engineer to remedy a water shortage by pumping and diverting the River Lynn at Partney Mill, the spot which inspired the poet's verse: "I chatter chatter as I flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever." Salem Eyes Offer Of Barrack Units Salem, Jan. 31 U.R The Salem housing commission is meeting to consider problems arising from the federal govern ment's plans to allocate 90 bar racks from Fort Vancouver, Washington, to the city and Willamette university. The government will pay the cost of moving and preparing the buildings for occupancy. But the property sites for the units must be provided locally, with city water, sewage and other utility services. COLORADO WILL GET VETERANS HOSPITAL Washington, Jan. 31 (U.PJ The Veterans administration said today it was taking bids on a 150 bed general medical and surgical hospital at Grand Junc- Hon, Colo., to be opened Feb.
