By Foster Parents New York, Jan. 30 IU.PJ An unhappy love affair drove Charles Emerich into a life of seclusion in the house nn Bar. bey street and he remained there lor iz years, until death drove him out. The bodv of the Rat-he v straat hermit was found yesterday lay ing on a sack of coal in the kitchen of the dilapidated two story house which had been be queathed him by his foster par ents. A doctor said death was from "natural causes." Neighbors often had wonder ed where Emerich got the money he spent for food. A search of the premises revealed a steel box containing 1,300 shares of stock, deeds to property and a $2,000 life insurance policy. To tal value of the property was estimated at $29,000. Memphis police wired local authorities that no such slaying had been reported there, but the youth was held pending further investigation of the youth's fingerprints and police files. Every morn ing my nose is so dry it hurts and many morn ings I awaken Dr. Brady with my eyes burning. My wife has the same trouble but she won't admit poor ventilation has anything to do with it. Haven't scientists discovered that plants or flowers take up the oxygen and moisture in a room that hu mans need? ' (E.L.) We do not understand, or may be we misunderstand your ad vice about flowers in a sickroom. Please explain why nurses al ways remove flowers from the room of a hospital patient for the night. (Mrs. I. D. A.) If you will be good enough to answer this you will end a lot of arguments. Is it or is it not an indication of too much water evaporating in the house or of excessive dampness when the window panes become all frost ed? (H. J.) I suggest a full sash size win dow screen of unbleached mus lin in the outer sunporch win dow and the Inner bedroom win dow of the house of the E. L.'s, That will keep the air in the bedroom reasonably fresh and moist and comfortable, yet not permit the sunporch to become coid enough to damage the plants. Plants growing in the house use up insufficient oxygen to matter, in fact they use up some carbon dioxide (given off from the lungs of animals and men) and give off some oxygen to the air. Moreover, their leaves, and the pots if common porous pots are used, evaporate considerable desirable moisture in the air day j and night. For all of these rea- j sons growing plants or flowers : in the house, living room, bed- room, kitchen or elsewhere, im-1 prove the air and rather benefit j the health of occupants. Only ! good reason why cut flowers are 1 removed from the hospital pa-; tient's room at night is to get them out of the way in case doc- i tor or nurre has to work. I hope no hospital is so benighted as to permit any one to think plants or cut flowers in the room are in any way harmful, day or night. Frosting of window panes does not indicate too much water vapor in the air of the house, nor does collection of moisture on the window panes or obvious dampness of walls or other sur faces in the room. That indicates that such surfaces are cold and water vapor from the air in the room condenses on them, so that the air in the house or room is actually drier, contains less wa ter vapor, than is desirable for comfort and health. Frosting of windows or dampness or visible drops of water on walls may be corrected by storm sash on win- i dows and by insulation of walls ; say with wallboard or similar j lining which provides air-space : between for insulation. Mean while, try evaporating more water rather than less in the house or room and you will find j this is true. ! Jonkman, R., Mich., said today that the sugar shortage is about to become "ser iously worse." He blamed offic ials of the agriculture depart ment for the situation. Jonkman, subcommittee chair man of the Republican congres sional food study committee, charged in a speech prepared for the house, that the agriculture officials were guilty of "gross negligence and misfeasance" in their administration of the sugar program. He asked the house for prompt action on a measure granting the necessary authority "to clear up this administration mess."
