ST- MEEKER CHOSEN OREGON CIIIES 1 LEAGUE OFFICER Portland, Ore., Jan. 24 House Speaker Eugene Marsh of McMinnville told delegates at the final joint session of League of Oregoo Cities and Oregon ' Finance Officers association here Wednesday that Oregon has a ;ound tax program despite the feeling among many Oregonians that the state has no chance to attract new industries in compe tition with Washington and Cali fornia. A resolution railing for a greater decentralization of dis . tribution centers for surplus ma terials, downward revision of minimum purchase lots end per mission of resale of excess amounts with proper safeguards was passed at the final session. Officers elected for the com ing year by the league included Orval Eaton, Astoria, president; George Stadelman, The Dalles, first vice president; C. A. Meek er, mayor of Medford, second vice president, J. W. McArthur, Eugene, treasurer, and Earl Riley, Portland, Fred C. Inkster, Oswego, O. L. Wood, Coquille, and I. M. Doughton, Salem, di rectors. Boy Scout News Prospect, Jan. 24 Executive committee of Boy Scout Troop 19, Upper Rogue met at the home of Committeeman Lu Rogers Jan. 21. Present were Chairman Lu Rogers; finance, Fred S v i n t h; outdoorsman, Clyde Onn; advancement, Mel McGrew; Scout master, Jim Grieve; committee man at large, Jack Hollenbeak; Scoutmaster, Archie Wilson and assistant Scoutmaster Reg. Macro. Plans were made for the Father and Son banquet to be held during Boy Scout Week at the high school cafeteria and for an all-Scout skiing party to be held at Union Creek on Feb. 2. Hoppe has been Invited by the American College of Oral Surgeons, which has its meating in Chicago a week prior to the Chicago Midwinter clinic, to read a paper and lead a dis cussion on the drug, penicillin. The meeting, held annually, is attended by oral surgeons from the United States and other countries. For the past two and a half years Major Hoppe has been chief of the oral surgery branch and in charge of oral diseases at Barnes General hospital, Van-! couver. Wash. Jan. ti SJ.B Oral arguments will be heard by the United States Supreme court Monday on the appeal of Consolidated Freight Ways, Inc., Portland, and Oregon, Nevada, California Fast Freight Inc., San Francisco, from an adverse United States district court de cision, respecting their motor freight operating rights between San Francisco and Portland, The Consolidated and O. N. C. lines formerly connected at Medford and effected a Joint- line through service. In 1940 each appealed to the interstate commerce commission for au thority to extend its service and were granted the extension which started in Sept. 1943. Later, four opposing lines brought an action before a statu tory three-judge United States district court to have the com mission's findings set aside. The district court sustained the con tentions of the protesting lines and decreed in February, 1945, that the two certificates should be suspended and the cases re manded to the ICC for further hearing. The case then was ap pealed directly to the supreme court. Assessor Requests Speed-up in Return Of Personal Taxes County Assessor C. A. Myers; reports people are not filing their personal tax report blanks as speedily as they should, and he requests they do so at once. The assessor requests they be filed before February 1 in order to facilitate the work of his of fice and prevent a last minute rush. Undr the law the reports can be filjd as late as March 1. After that date a $10 per day penalty is possible. The report; blanks were mailed out January 1 and to date only a small por tion have been filed. The assessor also suggests that the reports be mailed. Many have been bringing them to as sessor's office in person. St Augustine, Fla., is the old est town in the United States. It was founded in 1565. Military Funeral Given Jos, Kridter, Veteran of War I Full military honor were glvn en Joseph E. Kridler, 49, of t!2 N. Ivy street, Thursd&y after noon at the graveside in the IOOF cemetery. He passed away in the naval hospital, Camp; White, last Saturday. Arrange ments were ii care of the Con-ger-Morrfs Funeral Parlors. He was born in Dunkirk, Ohio, on March 27, 1898. A veteran; of World War 1, he enlisted in the army on Jan. 18, 1918 at Columbus Barrackf, Ohio. He was honorably discharged on March 31, IS18. having served as a corporal in Company i, 1st infantry. H had made his home in this community for the past four years. . Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillice Mae Kridler; a daughter,; Cheryl, at home, and an aunt, Mrs. E. S. Swing, Ohio. News of4-H CLUBS Eagle Point Beef club met Jan. 10 at the home of their leader, Geo. Millard. This meet ing was for the purpose of re organization as this was the for mer Reese Creek club which joined the Eagle Point 4-H club this year. Record books were handed out and 13 members were listed. All have their steers now and a number are showing heifers as well.
