He never goes out. Can you help us? . (H.R.J.) I'm afraid when they get hard ened to such temperatures they are beyond the pale. For that matter a good many old geezers are impervious to rhyme or rea son about fresh air before they have passed forty. Not that this particular hel lion will give it a moment's con sideration, but just on the off chance that you can give it a try, perhaps in some rear bed rooms as far as possible from the head devil's chamber, let me suggest a sash-size unbleached muslin window screen. This ad mits some fresh air and desira ble moisture, but excludes wind, drafts, snow, rain. It is the extreme aridity or dryness of the air rather than the extreme heat that accounts for most of the discomforts and complaints suffered by every body, including the grampa him self, in such an indoor climate. Among the discomforts and com plaints so caused are the ex treme sensitiveness to drafts which this shiek of the indoor Sahara manifests; constant irri tation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract; rough ness, dryness, chapping and cracking of the skin; brittleness of nails; peevishness and irrita bility of everybody who is much confined in the house. Even old grumpy will find a household temperature of 68 or 70 degrees F. with a reasonable amount of water vapor constant ly added to the air more com fortable than a temperature of 75 or higher with no added water vapor. Even if you can contrive to evaporate only a gallon or two of water in the house or apart ment in a day, that is better than nothing, but evaporation of not less than one gallon per room per day is a nearer approach to the ideal humidity of a perfect autumn day.
