Oregon Teacher In Outstanding By Dorothy Prultt An evening of rare musical satisfaction was provided by Ralph Dobbs, pianist, at a con cert given at the High school auditorium on Friday, Jan. 18. Recently out of the armed serv ices, Mr. Dobbs is now continu ing with his third year in the music department at Willamette university. Previously he spent three seasons with Columbia Concerts and three years at Wes leyan university at Blooming ton, 111. The concert was sponsored by the Medford High school music department, under the direction of Miss Mabel Nansen, and by the Medford Musical society. A masterful technique was Im mediately displayed in Mr. Dobb's first group of numbers, "Introduction and Fugue" by the early 18th Century composer, Vivaldi, transcribed by the con temporary Casella, and the "Handelian Rhapsody" by Scott. But it was in the "Sonata in B Minor" by Liszt that the out standing gifts of this artist be came really apparent. Here, the desirable blending of a highly finished technique with inspira tion served to make the listener conscious of hearing that rare and illusive quality known as the inevitable in his work. In any art this is an achievement. Yet often one is seen without the other inspiration perhaps, but with fumbling technique, or a brilliant technique but with a dry-as-dust interpretation. With his sensitive phrasing, round rich tone colors, and expressive rhythms, Mr. Dobbs succeeded in convincing his audience that they were listening to music faithful to the composer him self: as it was meant to be played. A sense of quiet grace, ease, and pure melodic beauty shone in the Brahms "Intermezzo in E Major, op. 116." In the highly emotional and seldom-heard "Scherzo in B Minor" by Chopin was revealed an amazing flexi bility and sensitive grasp of shadings varying from delicacy to force; The Debussyesque "Nocturne .by Claude Griffes, young American composer who died at a too-early age, revealed still a restraint and control of tone that produced a fragile, al most whisper -like delicacy There was a sharply contrasting release of fire and flourish in the "Gypsy Chorus" from "Car men" by Bizet-Moszkowski: and a colorful feeling for rhythm in me popular melody of Spain. "El Vito Variations," by the con. temporary composer. Infante. All in all, the listener left the : auditorium with a feeling of hav-; ing listened to an artist posses- j sing musicianship of a rare di-j mension, Rogue River Mill Resuming Cutting Monday Morning i Rogue River, Jan. 19 The Rogue River Lumber company sawmill here which has been shut down since the Christmas holidays by lack of logs, will be open Monday. The owners, D. L. Goforth and O. D. Sandefur of Vallejo, Calif., state that the recent strike and bad weather resulted in failure of logs to arrive at the mill and caused depiction of the surplus. Logging in the woods was not curtailed but hauling was halted by a picket line. Dimension cuts in fir are prod uced by the mill which saws about 50,000 feet per day.
