FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Thur.day. Jan. 17. I94 Forest Park Suggested For Memorial To Heroes Of V ar John Gribble, 139 Kenwood street, retired Forest Service Bupervisor, and now representa tive here, has suggested a living memorial to the men and women of Jackson county who served in World War II. Gribble sug gests an acreage of forest trees in conjunction with the new city park. It was suggested the nark strip along liear Creek south of the new park might be exlended to the highway, mak ing a beautiful memorial forest- park. Gribble recalled the history of another memorial tree in Mcdford the little evergreen near Main street in the City park which is lighted each year as a community Christmus tree. For several years, Gribble re calls, a Douglas fir tree was cut and brought to the park, set up and decorated with electric lights. One of the last ones, 45 feet tall, was hauled from the top of a hill west of Jackson ville. The Christmas Tree commit tee was told, according to Gribble, that a tree could be grown from seed which some day mif,'ht serve as a community Christmas tree. On Arbor day in 1927 Mcdford Boy Scouts set out a two-year-old seedling, six or eight inches in height, with each boy putting a bit of soil about the tiny tree. The tret- was from a seed from a Mariposa grove near Yosemite Park in California and was planted by uribble at his home about 1925 The tree, now about 50 feet tall is the one decorated as a com munity tree last December. At the same time that the little Mariposa was planted, Gribble said the Scouts also planted on other of the same seedlings west of the Library building but it was pulled up by vandals the following spring. Photographs of the planting were taken and signed by all the Scouts and Is on record at the historical society. 10 DISCUSS Fl Grants Pass, Jan. 17 Plans for a 1948 county fair will be discussed by the" county fair board Friday evening In the of fice of Judge W, A.
